JB's Presser after EMU

You would think after a game so many guys played well and we had the laugher we expect, old sour puss would have been less sour.

Kinda surprised at this PC, but we've seen this team a few times this year. We've had blowouts in 6 of our 7 wins. JB knows this team can beat inferior teams, I think he wants to see it vs. a good team. We better crush St. John's

lol this place (and SU fandom at large) is just the best-
folks in panic mode at JB deflated after team craps bed against gtown... then back in "why is JB such a sour puss" mode after he gives a typica-JB presser after a blowout over a team that barely showed up... gotta luv it

He still gets absolutely furious at some things I (and in my defense, the people around me) don't see. I think if I got that mad, I would probably pass out from the stress of it. I have never been that mad in my entire life - oh, okay, there was one time when, no! I still can't talk about it - and he gets apoplectic at least half a dozen times a game! I worry about stroke and maybe one of his eyeballs popping out.

Still, it's possible it could keep him young. I am not sure a coach's life is a happy life.

Geez I would imagine having your best player injured on a team that has struggled, might temper his enthusiasm.
I can't imagine that he was thinking about anything more than he was thinking about Lydon's injury and its possible ramifications. But, of course, all coaches have to give the "we'll see" answer. It must be frustrating. I do find his Roberson answers more and more troubling. I don't know anything about the kid and he is clearly underperforming in general. Whether or not Roberson listens to the press conferences, I can't imagine being a Roberson family member and having to listen to those answers. JB doesn't usually treat seniors this way. I would be happy if there were no questions about Roberson for the rest of the year, even if he scores 50 with 30 rebounds.

Don't you dare be sour. Clap for your world famous, longest reigning tag champs, and feeeeeel the power!!!

(Maybe I should've stayed on my self-imposed board vacation)

IMO this is what has gotten him close to 1000 wins and one of the reasons he has not ended a single season with a losing record. He is such a fierce competitor and knows that they have their backs against the wall which requires a great run in conference play in order to turn things around. He refuses to fail and is going to push push without taking his foot off of the gas and I'm grateful for it. Yes he does come off as a little sour, but I feel that this attitude and drive is what makes the great ones so successful. I do worry a little about the next guy being "too nice" or appearing satisfied after a blow out win over a cream puff when there are obvious flaws against the more talented rosters which could lead to more mediocrity than we have been used to. I personally hope that Hop is taking good notes.

PS- as noted above Lydon situation prob didn't help either

Well, St. John's isnt a good team, so JB will have to wait.

I missed the first half and first third or so of the second half, and actually have the game recorded so I watched it after. Can't remember the last time I've seen Jim so visibly frustrated. Over a dozen times he jumped out of his seat and threw his hands up or walked up and down the bench... sometimes you could actually here is yell on the TV. I know a lot of us wanted some more emotion from Jim during the games, and you got it.

As for the game- did we score? Yeah... but there were still so many errors. I take absolutely nothing from this game, other than Taurean is our best player in the middle against a zone. Everything else? We've seen it all before. It's a tease...so far.

I take away that we are good at scoring against midget zones and our guys look much more comfortable overall against teams that shouldn't be able to compete with us athletically and size wise. Its still alarming to me how tight and indecisive we looked as a group in the SC, Wisc, Uconn, Gtown games. The first half defensive rebounding was poor IMO. The guards are still a work in progress running half court stuff and the defense was active but still far from playing the way it will need to in ACC play.

It's weird. We scored 100 points and won by 50 and it meant nothing to me. Yeah, it's EMU, but that is still a beat-down.

We still made some stupid plays, especially the guards. There were a handful of times Gillon and Battle made some lazzzzy telegraphed passes that against ACC level competition would lead to a layup or dunk the other way. I am sure as a coach it has to be maddening that in game 11 your players are still doing stupid stuff they did in game one. Outside of Thompson and Lydon this team lacks basketball intelligence.

It is weird, scoring 100 on anyone these days in college hoops doesn't happen that much. Still at this point we pretty much have to take the lets wait to see what we do against a decent ACC team approach. We did get a lot of good shots and made most of them. I also thought our attack of the basket as a group was more aggressive than it has been. No one tried anything soft in there which really helped our shooting percentage because we were either finishing or shooting FT's.

We had what, 21 assists on our first 21 baskets or something crazy?

We will have the worst guard play in the ACC. I don't see how we win many games with Frank, Gillon and Battle initiating our offense.

We don't usually have senior starters that can't be counted on to perform even semi consistently from game to game.

Everyone gets treated differently based on what JB believes he can get out of them. Clearly he believes there is something to be gotten out of Roberson given that he has cared enough to make him the whipping boy, but I think he is starting to reach the end of the rope. I think Robie is reaching (maybe reached it two or three games ago) a major turning point. If he doesn't turn it around like almost immediately, his opportunity will be gone and it will be TT's opportunity to lose. TT is already dug significantly into Roberson's playing time. A night like last night was a chance for Robie to move the needle back towards himself a bit...not sure he did that. At some point JB has got to say its not worth continuing to make the investment in Robie, the investment should be made in TT.

Tons of mistakes. It really was masked by the crazy shooting. Why do Gillons bounce passes bounce up and not out?

Yeah. He called a TO so he could stare down Battle, who gave up a long offensive rebound because he leaked out hoping for a fast break.

the inconsistencies of boeheim's wrath is what is truly maddening. if you're gonna bench a player for a silly turnover or not covering a shooter then apply that rule equally to everybody ! instead he plays favorites and that inequality has to be frustrating for any player on the short end of his temper.

I agree I think it is all about what he can get out of the kid and how good he thinks he can be. If he is getting everything he thinks the kid is capable of doing he doesn't really ride them as hard. I also think he has certain issues built in with kids that he views as part of playing them. Like so and so makes a lot of good plays but to get that he will make a mistake or two. MCW is an example of that. I think with Robey he needs him to pay a plus defensive player and rebounder because he can't shoot. This is not happening and that is why he is getting treated the way he is. It's not personal in my opinion and I don't think he just really likes some kids so he doesn't go after them.
