Jerome is 6-0 226 and can take iit the distance. Andre Williams is 6-0 227 and can take it the distance.

"Ah, but that's where the comparison ends. Andre Williams has rushed for 2073 yards and is the nation's leading rusher."

But Jerome has carried the ball only 166 times, an average of 15 a game. Andre has carried it 320 times, an average of 29 a game.

"But Andre has averaged 6.5 yards per carry. Jerome has only averaged 4.8."

But great backs tend to increase their average per carry as the game goes along and the defesne gets worn down.

"But Andre has scored 16 touchdowns. Jerome has scored only 11."

Which means Andre has scored once in every 20 carries while Jerome has scored once in ever 15 carries."

"I don't care, it's just obvious that Andre is on a whole other level of talent."

You wouldn't have guess that last season when Andre rushed for 584 yards and 4 touchdowns on 130 carries and Jerome ran for 1171 yards and 3 scores on 227 carries.

I wonder what numbers Jerome might have had if we'd given him the chances Steve Addazio gave Andre?

How many 1 yard gains does Williams have because I don't think I can take all of those 1 yard climb the o-lines back into a pile of 1 yard gains. My guess is that Williams can read holes better and maybe has a better o-line.

Yesterday, Williams carried the ball 32 times. 19 of them were for 3 yards or less. He lost yardage 5 times and was held for no gain twice.

One could argue that no coach should be running a college RB as often as Addazio does with Williams. I know why he does it, but it seems a bit inappropriate to me, given that RBs only have so many carries in them before their careers are effectively over.

That being said, our use of Smith this year is head scratching, to be kind.

Interesting SWC. What I would love to see is how many were 2 yards or less for Williams? How many 2 or less did Smith have on Saturday out of his carries? I get the bulldog idea but too many times SU has not only second and 9 but 3rd and 8 after those Smith carries. It may work vs some teams but not those with a solid front line or better.

As an aside, it seemed that Jerome absorbed some big hits yesterday. There were a couple I wasn't sure he would get up afterwards.

Funny...I didn't realize that BC kicked a 52 yard FG outside to win the game.

Williams had 13 rushes for 2 yards or less and 5 for a loss, Smith had 7 rushes for 2 or less and 2 for a loss. Pretty close with 32 carries to 17 carries for Smith.

we have 4 capable backs they probably only have 1

are you sure about the wearing down the defense stuff?

andre williams is 43rd in the country in ypc

That would seem to be proof of it. The idea is that as the game goes along, you start to break more and more big ones. And Williams last year averaged 4.5 on 130 carries. This year he's 6.5 on 320 carries.

The John McKay theory of football isn't my favorite but if you have a guy who can do it, it can work.

Murky. First half has higher YPC for him but 4th q is his best q

if you watch our games, smith makes some solid runs, but he cant turn the corner and misses holes way too often. I think Morris has done a great job of hitting holes in limited carries. one of the big plays yesterday we ran a sweep had 3 blockers and 2 Pitt guys, but our oline guy stumbled and took smith out or he likely takes it 60 yds.

SU doesnt put together drives. So its not like anyone is going to get Floyd Little Larry Czonka carries. Too many runs into the pile for one or two yards on the first and or second downs followed by a incomplete on third with pass holding, illegal procedure, personal foul penalties mixed in.

Isn't it possible that Williams is just a better back?

That's what I'm asking. Is he better or does he just get the ball more?

Where do you see all these holes Smith is missing? I see several plays where almost as soon as he gets the ball 2 linemen have been stood up and he's running into a wall.

FWIW I ran into a guy today at Mohegan Sun who said his son played for BC last year - said Williams has 51" thighs.

Ray Rice got the ball 910 times in three years including 380 his last, which was the main reason he dropped in the draft. It's a lot, but even in this day and age, not unprecedented.

Besides, Rettig is atrocious.

In all honesty, Smith couldn't handle a 30 carry workload in one game. On all of his carries greater than 5 yards against Pitt, he immediately got up off the fieldturf and waived to the sideline for a breather.

From a BC fan, here's the deal with Williams. He's all power and speed. He's the opposite of our last great RB, Montel Harris... Harris had none of Williams' natural talents but he was a ninja... he could find openings, break tackles with balance rather than power... he was Greg Maddux to Williams' Roger Clemens. Williams does not have great vision or lateral movement. He breaks a lot of tackles once he's moving forward, but he's not the kind of RB who breaks tackles in the backfield by spinning out of them and making something out of nothing. His success is due to the fact that BC's offense is perfectly suited to his strengths, and the offensive line has done a good job. BC runs a lot of jumbo packages... you'll probably see a package with 6 OL, 1 TE, 1 WR, and then Williams and maybe another OL lining up at fullback and motioning. They'll run a lot of counter out of the jumbo formations and use other wrinkles to keep the defense guessing. The idea is to block man on man, win the most important blocking matchups, and if one of the free defenders misread the play or gets run over, it's gonna be a big play. So there can be a lot of 2 yards, 1 yard, -1 yard, 65 yards for Williams. BC will go spread in and long situations, and is still willing to run the draw play pretty often. Our QB can be incredibly bad, especially on the road... he locks onto his favorite targets (to be fair, the other guys can't get open anyway). For the most part though, he's at least been able to stay out of the way, not lose the game himself, and make the occasional big play once the defense is completely preoccupied. Here's to a good game on Saturday.
