From a BC fan, here's the deal with Williams. He's all power and speed. He's the opposite of our last great RB, Montel Harris... Harris had none of Williams' natural talents but he was a ninja... he could find openings, break tackles with balance rather than power... he was Greg Maddux to Williams' Roger Clemens. Williams does not have great vision or lateral movement. He breaks a lot of tackles once he's moving forward, but he's not the kind of RB who breaks tackles in the backfield by spinning out of them and making something out of nothing. His success is due to the fact that BC's offense is perfectly suited to his strengths, and the offensive line has done a good job. BC runs a lot of jumbo packages... you'll probably see a package with 6 OL, 1 TE, 1 WR, and then Williams and maybe another OL lining up at fullback and motioning. They'll run a lot of counter out of the jumbo formations and use other wrinkles to keep the defense guessing. The idea is to block man on man, win the most important blocking matchups, and if one of the free defenders misread the play or gets run over, it's gonna be a big play. So there can be a lot of 2 yards, 1 yard, -1 yard, 65 yards for Williams. BC will go spread in and long situations, and is still willing to run the draw play pretty often. Our QB can be incredibly bad, especially on the road... he locks onto his favorite targets (to be fair, the other guys can't get open anyway). For the most part though, he's at least been able to stay out of the way, not lose the game himself, and make the occasional big play once the defense is completely preoccupied. Here's to a good game on Saturday.
Sounds a lot like us except you've committed to the run more than we did. Can you tell us how you managed to play Florida State close?
