Jerami Grant Updates

Jerami Grant - Syracuse

The verdict is still out on Grant. A team taking Grant would be doing so based on his tremendous physical gifts and a small sample size, but that tiny amount of game tape is certainly an impressive one.

Grant stands at 6-8 and produced enough highlight-reel material in just two years at Syracuse to have many scouts praising his athletic ability, although admittedly raw, and his potential to be dangerous in the NBA.

Grant averaged 12.1 ppg and 6.8 rpg as a sophomore with the Orange, but his minutes and production declined in February due to a back injury. Even so, when he was on the floor he was a major difference maker, with Syracuse going 19-0 in games he played prior to Feb. 1 and 7-7 after, when Grant never played more than 24 minutes in a game.

26. Miami Heat: Jerami Grant, SF, Syracuse. One talent evaluator told me the hyper-athletic Grant could have been a top-10 pick if he'd stayed in college one more year and improved his game. It's no secret that the Heat are in dire need of a point guard, and I would absolutely love inserting Shabazz Napier here, but I can't see the Heat getting a competent NBA point guard at this draft position unless they trade up. A point guard here (i.e., Semaj Christon of Xavier) wouldn't be an upgrade from Mario Chalmers. As for Grant, he is all potential. He doesn't have a reliable jumper, though, and might be a tweener in the NBA.

That assessment makes me ill...

Dammit...

21. Jerami Grant – SF – Syracuse

At 21:

At 29: C-

Strengths

Grant has excellent length and size for an NBA 3. 6-foot-8 with a 7-foot-3 wingspan allows him to do things many cannot. He's extremely athletic and can finish well at the rim. He's quick for his size and can defend multiple positions.

Weaknesses

The main goal of basketball is to put the ball in the basket – that's where Grant struggles. He's a terrible shooter, who seemed to airball as many jumpers as he made. Despite his size, he only weighs 217 lbs, which is too light to defend NBA forwards. If he wants to play on the block, he'll have to gain significant weight. If he wants to play on the perimeter, he'll need to completely overhaul his jump shot.

NBA player comparison

Mike Kidd-Gilchrist, Andre Kirilenko

Why he fits the Thunder

He doesn't fit well, but he's a great athlete with a pretty high ceiling. If there's no one else left that OKC likes at 29, Grant would be a solid pick.
