Perhaps it is time for some trivia fun. My subject matter is the great Jim Brown, the greatest football player ever. Enjoy.

1) While attending Manhasset Secondary School in the early 1950s, Jim Brown set a then Long Island high school basketball record for ppg with an average of 38. This record would later be broken by another famous athlete who is a member major sports hall of fame. Name this individual.

2) At Syracuse University, Jim Brown’s domination of a particular sport resulted in a rule change to that sport. Name the sport and the rule change.

3) Prior to the 1957 NFL draft, Cleveland Browns’ head coach Paul Brown showed little interest in drafting Jim Brown. Instead, Paul Brown had targeted another player who he fully expected to be available with Cleveland’s #6 overall pick. When the Steelers, with the #5 pick, selected this player, Paul Brown response was (a bit of a paraphrase), “xxxx. Aw hell, let’s take that Brown kid from Syracuse.” The player he missed went on to have a Hall of Fame career. Name this individual.

4) In his nine years in the NFL, Jim Brown rushed for 1000+ yards eight times. In each of those eight seasons, he led the NFL in rushing yardage. Name the year he did not rush for 1000 yards, the player who won the rushing title, and Brown’s rushing total for that year.

5) In 1963, Jim Brown rushed for 1863 yards. That season, only one other NFL player barely cracked 1000 yards (1013) while the #3 rusher was more than 1000 yards less than Brown (841). Name the #2 and #3 rushers for 1963.

6) In 1965, Jim Brown scored 21 touchdowns. This number would have eclipsed the previous record, set in 1964, except that another player in 1965 scored 22 touchdowns. Name the player that scored 20 in 1964 and the player who scored 22 in 1965.

7) Jim Brown unexpectedly retired from football at the age of 29 prior to the start of the 1966 season. Why did he do so?

8) In the early 1980s, Jim Brown threatened to come out of retirement because a particular player, who was nearing the end of his career, was close to breaking his career yardage record. One NFL team was willing to sign him. Name that player, Brown’s motivation for coming out of retirement, and the team willing to sign him.

9) Jim Brown ended his career with an average yards/carry of 5.2. Only one NFL player of substantial yardage even comes close to this accomplishment. Name this player and his YPC.

10) Jim Brown rushed for 12,312 yards over nine seasons. His closest competitor during that time span (eight seasons) rushed for 7502 yards. No other player came close to rushing for ½ of Brown’s total. Name the one who did.

Bonus: Name the professional sport of Jim Brown’s father.

Interesting - where is the article?
Not an article - a poster who does trivia questions from time to time just put those questions out there.

Not sure where he got them from.

also didn't he retire because he wanted to go out on top?

2) lacrosse, but forgot the rule change

When he had posession of the ball, he would pin the stick against his chest, making it impossible for someone to knock the ball loose.

The rule change made it necessary to cradle the stick away from your body.

I think the player in 1965 that scored 22 touchdowns was Gayle Sayers.

1) The good doctor, Julius Erving.
2) Cradling.

1) Carl Yastrzemski
7) He was busy making movies (The Dirty Dozen at the time, I think).
8) Jim thought Franco Harris wasn't man enough to deserve his record, so he was going to come back with the Raiders.

Based on how Franco has handled the whole Penn State thing, I would tend to agree with Jim.

I have great "Bonus #2" question that deals with a balcony... but decided not to post it.

Sorry to post the questions and then dissappear for the weekend - answers below:

Carl Yastrzemski - he recieved a scholarship from Notre Dame

2) At Syracuse University, Jim Brown’s domination of a particular sport resulted in a rule change to that sport. Name the sport and the rule change.

Lacrosse and cradling. Just saw the post that calls this an Urban Legend, interesting.

3) Prior to the 1957 NFL draft, Cleveland Browns’ head coach Paul Brown showed little interest in drafting Jim Brown. Len Dawson - Paul Brown thought he would be the next Otto Graham

4) In his nine years in the NFL, Jim Brown rushed for 1000+ yards eight times. In each of those eight seasons, he led the NFL in rushing yardage. Name the year he did not rush for 1000 yards, the player who won the rushing title, and Brown’s rushing total for that year.

1962 - Jim was hurt this year and just missed 1,000 with 996 yards. Jim Taylor finished first that year with 1,474 yards

5) In 1963, Jim Brown rushed for 1863 yards. That season, only one other NFL player barely cracked 1000 yards (1013) while the #3 rusher was more than 1000 yards less than Brown (841). Name the #2 and #3 rushers for 1963.

Jim Taylor was #2 with 1,018 and Tim Brown #3 with 841

6) In 1965, Jim Brown scored 21 touchdowns. This number would have eclipsed the previous record, set in 1964, except that another player in 1965 scored 22 touchdowns. Name the player that scored 20 in 1964 and the player who scored 22 in 1965.

Lenny Moore had 20 in 1064 and Gayle Sayers had 22 in 1965.

7) Jim Brown unexpectedly retired from football at the age of 29 prior to the start of the 1966 season. Why did he do so?

Filming the Dirty Dozen - production ran late and Jim asked Art Modell if he could miss the first couple weeks of camp. Art told him to pick one or the other, so Jim did and Art regretted doing so.

Franco Harris, because he was a "soft runner" according to Jim. Al Davis was willing to sign Jim to the Raiders.

9) Jim Brown ended his career with an average yards/carry of 5.2. Only one NFL player of substantial yardage even comes close to this accomplishment. Name this player and his YPC.

Barry Sanders finished with a 5.0 YPC.

10) Jim Brown rushed for 12,312 yards over nine seasons. His closest competitor during that time span (eight seasons) rushed for 7502 yards. No other player came close to rushing for ½ of Brown’s total. Name the one who did.

Jim Taylor

Bonus: Name the professional sport of Jim Brown’s father.

Swinton Brown was a boxer.

I recall Brown being pretty specific that he didn't like the way Franco ran out of bounds too often to avoid getting hit.

FWIW, and while I'm sure Yaz is the correct answer and he was a very good BB player, he dominated at Bridgehamton HS in a very week HS league. I recall Manhassett being in a much stronger HS BB league.

1962 was the year that Jim was indeed hurt. But he never missed a game in 9 NFL years (118). Only Walter Payton exceeded that, but the record book only accounts for "starts," and I believe that Jim played in much more than half of every game, while Payton, had a few very-short-lived starts. Today, with 16 games/season, with most running backs being smaller that their tacklers, I don't see it happening any time soon either. If you look at the old NFL film, Brown, at 6'2" and 230-235, seems to be bigger than most all the backfield and LB corps he faced. BTW, Brown passed 1000 yards rushing in the last game of the 1962 season, but was thrown for a loss on one of the last plays. Also, BTW, Brown's injury in 1962 was a recurring issue with his wrist.
