Conversation got to how every coach sometimes misses out by not recognizing a big-time talent.

Jimmy told a story about how whenRick P was an asst coach that Rick wanted to give a scholie to a certain kid & Jimmy went for another (unnamed) player who he said never scored a hoop for the Cuse.

The kid Jimmy passed on was Rolando Blackman.

I hadn't heard that one before !!!

I was wondering about the timeframe for my post above & I am now thinking if Jimmy listened to Rick that we would have had Rolando on those Louie & Bouie teams.

Wow what might have been !!

heard that on Cowherd this morning . . . said the player he chose instead was "a guy who never scored a point for us," but looking at the rosters, it almost has to be Chris Jerebko, who scored about 250 points in his 4 year career. Had to be Jerebko, the other freshman from that season all had very good SU careers - Danny Schayes, Eddie Moss and Marty Headd.

I remember the Blackman recruitment. The story at the time was that they considered his game too similar to 2 guys they already had--Marty Byrnes and Dale Shackleford. Blackman turned out to have much more perimeter skill than either of those two.

It could be a year or two before or after Blackman entered college, I suppose too. Maybe JB remembers incorrectly, or the guy never actually made it to SU.

Looking at old team photos on SU Athletics, who was Bruce DeBord? He was in the 75-76 team photo, but never scored a point or earned a letter at SU. Apparently, he transferred to Roanoke after playing on the Freshman team. Could he be the player and JB got the years mixed up, or he left SU after they passed on Blackman?
