It was obvious in the first 5 minutes that the St. John's was attempting to follow the game plan that Notre Dame and WVa used with some success against us: engage us in a low scoring game by holding the ball and not shooting until the shot clock was under 10 secs. Our first few possessions we played right into their hands, by missing open shots from the outside. Eventually, our rebounding and transition game wrested control of the game, breaking the game open using runs at the end of the 1st half and beginning of the 2nd half. However, I think we can expect the remaining teams on our schedule, who have better shooters and rebounders, to attempt to employ the same approach against us.

SJU is no threat with no bigs. They'll need 1 or 2 if they want these talented freshman to ever make any real noise in the conference. I'm sure Lavs is working on it.

You can't run a bunch of freshman at this SU buzzsaw. We'll kill teams like that all day, every way, each way...the right way.

My point wasn't about St. John's. But ND and WVa really took us out of our game with this approach, and you can bet John Thompson will have his payers milking the shot clock Weds. night., and the Hoyas DO have the athletes and size to be effective.

We know this is a basic game plan against SU. Nobody has made it work except ND. The thing is though, I think this game plan is significantly easier to make work if we don't have Melo. With Melo in the middle, our guards can force the action much more effectively up top and challenge much better on the last 10 seconds of the shot clock heaves. Also we can hold our own in getting the defensive rebounds better with Fab in there.
