Class of 2023 Joseph "JP" Estrella (ME / Brewster)

I would take him for next year. Young team coming in would be nice to have a big with a good amount of experience.

Not here, we already have had a couple players transfer in with injuries, don't need anymore.
We can't make these types of declarations. We have very little in the frontcourt next year and will need to hammer the portal, could use an upperclassmen presence and overall this type of talent. Yeah, the injury history is not ideal but also shouldn't cause anyone to say no to him.

I'd take him in a heartbeat, but also add more around him.

Any given season, we are unlikely to play more than 10 at all, and the rotation is more likely to be smaller than that.

No better use for the 11-13 scholarships that to rehab injured former top30 transfers from other programs. Estrella transferring here, riding the bench and heading for a season, then playing two at a high level would be awesome.

It's the Westry, Cuffe, Wes Johnson plan, and sometimes it's going to really work out.

It's a much better use of that last spot on the bench than, say, Patterson, who was unlikely to ever actually play here.

Inside scoop from my friend at UT ( former basketball staffer) is the the Vols are very confident JP is not transferring. His bag last year was ~$400k.

I see 2 potential ways we might get him anyway:

1) Barnes may retire, I think everyone is in play at that point
2) Maybe we blatantly overpay and pull him that way. Don’t know if we have the money or how highly we value him.

we’ll have to wait and see.

He would be a very interesting name if he hits the portal but I would need to be 100% sure on his medicals. He missed the year and had surgery. We need to bring in two centers if he is one I wouldn't mind that. I would pay more than 400k for him.

I also would let you pay more than $400k for him. ;)

You would pay more than 400K for a big that just had to sit out the year with a injury?

Yes I probably would because the upside with someone of his skill level would be tremendous. You would be taking on tons of risk but the reward could be massive and in the state of our program we are going to have to take some risks on talent like this and hope we hit. Now that means I would play it safe with my other center and bring in a big PF 6/10ish PF for behind Donnie can that slide over and play some Center if needed but I think his upside would be worth the risk. (And again I would check out his medical report first)

You have never had to operate a budget, have you?

How can we possibly take on another guy post recent injury? We can’t afford to and should not afford to.
Because these are young kids, they heal, and also their price point is most often lower (not saying it will be with this guy). Yes, Chance Westry. I get it. There is fatigue. But we are not going to have 12 strong/healthy/viable talents in the rotation. There is an art to taking on a distressed asset and nurturing it back to full health/capacity.

For every Chance there is an Elijah Hughes.

It's bigs specifically with leg/foot issues that have killed us starting with Dajuan Coleman, Bourama Sidibe, and then McLeod. Pretty sure Pascal missed time too although I know that was for his eye and Jesse did for a wrist.

So William Tile makes sense now

We’re already taking the UCLA kid who got hurt last yr too. We can’t make this a trend.
