Class of 2023 JUCO DT Daniel Tupuola (CA) Offered

You guys have to remember that sometimes these JUCOs and such offer sheets aren’t going to be like a high school offer sheet

They also take a little more time to build, I wouldn’t judge any kids on their offer sheets.

He also says "another D1 offer" in his post which presumably means we don't know his full offer sheet. Wonder if he just became academically eligible or if something else was holding back prior offers?

Also he doesn't specify he's been offered a scholarship from SU, could be a potential walk on offer at which capacity everyone in this thread would want him.

At some point they should envision his skill set in our defense and determine value. He has some clips posted on his twitter. I get it though, some people don't want to do the research so they just look at offers.

That's fair and unfair. I don't get paid to evaluate talent (though I'd like to think I have a good eye). There are 130 FBS programs and 128 havent offered (maybe 129). All of those schools have people paid to evaluate talent. Maybe we're first here (which would be awesome), maybe he's just a perfect fit, but our track record doesnt reveal we're any better at evaluating talent than anyone else.

His team had a good year. He looks to have been an important contributor.

Anyway, good for Daniel. Hope he's successful wherever he ends up and particularly if it's at SU.

I get it. I just thought it was easy to see how he fits. He's a interior lineman that has good lateral movement for his size. We've all seen the players they currently have play in the scheme. It doesn't take an evaluation specialist to see that. Not sure what you are insinuating but all coaches recruit to their scheme. I'm not pointing that out to give them props. Its common practice.

I think he is referring to some of the offers posted when he says another D1.
NC Central, Texas St, WIU are all D1 schools. FCS but D1.

I think our staff is actually really good at identifying players, they just have not been good at closing the deal and have not been good, at least on the offensive side, of developing players

I would add that with the transfer portal JUCO's have to be pretty special imo to garner a lot of P5 offers. Pre-portal it was HS kids and if you wanted an upperclassman you could scout JUCOs. Now you're looking at the Portal 1st, JUCO second.

On the Mount San Antonio website it says he played ( DT ) in 6 games this year I'm sure the staff has some film on him playing ( DT ) also I think he could be looked at as an H - Back ( RHINO ) part2
My first thought was wondering if he is being recruited for the Rhino roll as well as the first picture on his team bio was this one below.

Also important to note that offer lists may change. So, that list was who was involved with him during the season. Now that the season is over for many / most teams, they are looking to fill out their recruiting classes, replace outbound portal transfers, or bounce to a quality alternative if you miss out on a guy you're actively recruiting.

So more P5 offers could be forthcoming if this prospect is good enough.

hudl bio lists DT/FB and also says 285 lbs. At 6'-0 I like 285 lbs better.

So, I'll leave the player evaluations to coaches like CIL or Money, who know what they are looking at with respect to game film.

But I don't think that looking at the offer list and worrying that this prospect isn't P5 caliber doesn't make sense, because Tony White has earned the benefit of the doubt given how the DL performed these past two years. Quality and depth. We have one need, for a "bigger" DT who can serve as a run plugger, but still do the things we need him to do in a 3-3-5, mobility wise.

This kid is "bigger." There's no reason to think that White would go out and recruit a warm body -- the goal is to get a player who can contribute and challenge for a spot in the two-deep.

This kid might not be the only option that they are pursuing [or will pursue] at DT, either. But them being on him so early implies that they view him as a system fit. The film makes it seem like he has pretty good speed for a player that size, and he's got that Samoan build, so maybe he is.

All year [and even dating back to last off-season], posters were clamoring for them to go out and add size at DT. Now, they're doing it and people still complain.

Correct

I've always wanted to add size at DT and have always viewed it this way. It doesn't have to mean you change your base D because you need a 300 LB run plugger. I always saw it as enhancing what we do and having options based on the game plan vs. the offense you're facing.

Agreed.

And hopefully this kid [or another transfer prospect like him] and Hough give us those "bigger" options that we lacked this season.

I think we will have more success getting one this year. Last off season the bigger options that were worth a dam chose other teams.

Hough is my hope on the line. I haven’t seen him lately but it seemed he had quickness and good lateral movement as a back. I’m hoping it translates to dline. Quick hands and strong push pull are huge advantages at that spot. Darton has probably some of the best hands I have seen. He turns a single center easier than most 300 lb ers. With the required rest and rotation, Darton is almost unblockable for 1 guy. He has beat up every center except wake guy and that was cause of the wedge they ran.

Call me nuts but I'd like to sign this kid as a pure Rhino replacement. Strictly FB. He's an experienced blocker and moves like a freight train. Let Wes and Max Mang focus on their natural positions [and minimize the unfortunate penalties], bring this kid in, and let him go bang.

It's a specialty role we deploy and this kid is tailor made for it. But a lot of teams aren't looking for FB's or 6' in cleats DT's.
