Just another game, with yet another guy...

For yet another team, have yet another career game. :(

They have career games because if they're able to shoot from 4 feet back of the three point line they have an open shot every single time. It's not rocket science on how we get torched by one guy then the guy disappears the rest of the season against other teams.

This goes back 10 years maybe more, but I remember a Sunday afternoon game against ND where their star player got around 30 points, and the usual zone disciples were using the old "that guy is shooting from 25-30 ft, what can SU do?" excuse. The next game ND played Pitt, and they were all over him from the moment he crossed halfcourt. He struggled to get 10.

This is definitely part of the issue. Another is that we adjust/shade our zone to take away the other team's best shooter/scorer. However, when a defense overcompensates to eliminate one threat, it opens up others. Boeheim's hope is that the opponent can't take advantage of the opportunities these adjustments provide. He talks about this issue in his 2-3 Zone DVD.

watching the espn classic game last week before northcarolina we saw boeheim playing a box and one on the tar heels jeff lebo.
he was their leading scorer and only deep threat and we kept a man directly in his grill most of the game. boeheim's strategy.

Most ACC coached teams are just too smart not to adjust to the decades plus zone that he has been running...Time to adjust his gameday strategies ,but the real question is...Does JB want to adjust? the short and long answer is NO as he left himself with no options as he is all zone now

That's really interesting in that it highlights how Boeheim used to change defenses (even "junk defenses") based on the game and situation. Did he play it the whole game, or was it a second-half adjustment?

The 2-3 zone allows adjustments to limit more than one player, but it can't do so for all five opponents. The Box-and-1 essentially limits only one scorer's touches. Hence, Boeheim probably wouldn't employ the Box-and-1 against teams with a couple of possible threats. However, perhaps it could have been used in spot situations over the years, though it would have to be taught and practiced for that to happen.

boeheim actually opened the game (tip off classic) in a full court man to man pressure D. he switched defenses as the game dictated and often on alternate possessions. vitale made a comment that sherman douglas was actually better suited to man. he also alternated "chasers" between stevie t, roe ,duncan to avoid fatigue. and he played 9 guys substantial minutes. (seikaly, coleman, thompson, douglas, duncan, roe ,harried, brower and eventual transfer keith hughes. we ain't always been zone exclusive and were pretty successful.

(edit: we lost that game in overtime so he probably scrapped the whole system ! )
