kelvin sampson interview

Do we not have injured players now?
I meant players who were out: Onuaku, Melo, Howard.

I wouldn’t count Sidibe, as he’s been out basically the entire season.

Dayton? Although our D was fine that game ... it was the offense that killed us
We made one shot out of the paint all game. The entire game...40 minutes... ENTIRE GAME... one jumper. Absolutely insane. I remember voicing concerns about our offense before we even lost a game yet that season (which was weeks into the year of course), but I guess ...scoreboard...?

Anyway... I am glad we have some shooters. Let's hope we keep this hot streak!!

I just read Pete Thamel's article where he talked to Sampson and Sampson said one of the reasons his Oklahoma team was blown out in 2003 (still the most confused I've seen a team versus the zone) was because Hollis Price and another player were injured. I found that excuse funny all these years later.
Update on Hollis Price. He is the Director Player Development at ... you guessed it ... Houston! Try not to have many nightmares as you prepare this week from that Sunday in Albany, Hollis.

So with Price and Quannas White on board this must be like their revenge fantasy now. Love to extend that further.

Sampson will do everything possible to take Buddy out of play. They will be all over the glass. They will pressure Joe.
We need to play big.
Bras Edwards Kadary.

Bras because of his D and high motor. Bras is a very good rebounder.

Edwards to allow Marek to play his natural position and bring size to the middle which is very important against teams that crash.

Kadary to beat their pressure.

If these three play significant minutes i believe we win.

I guess we win the NC, then.

Yeah, we didn’t hit a three. Not one.

Allen Griffin was an assistant at Dayton. If you want to say that doesn’t count, let’s just agree to disagree.
Should it count? We didn't play zone exclusively when he was with the team and the zone we played was nothing like what we do now.

We started playing zone exclusively in 1996. Griffin was a freshman in 1997.

Agree to disagree.

We were up double digits and blew it against the eventual national champs.

That’s the only time Izzo beat us, BTW.
And he needed help from the refs, as well, in that game as I recall...

All of our tournament losses last decade were against coaches familiar with our zone or when we had injured/suspended key players. You would have to go back to Oklahoma in 2009 to find a game that didn’t meet either of those criteria.
Was that the Blake Griffin team?

We'll have to. As I said, the zone we played then was nothing like the one we play now.
