if you read the article that was posted, the ref was specifically asked after the game if the kid said anything, and the ref said no, player did not say anything to him that contributed to the ejection.That was my guess as well. Not sure how the rule is worded. Obviously there was contact with the referee - initiated by the referee it appears. But if the kid puts his hands out and pushes the refs hands away and says, "Get away from me you a-hole." Yeah, I'm flagging him too.
The thing was the kid stepped out out bounds and the side judge should have been blowing his whistle to stop the contact from going that far.
Awful, awful judgment there. The ref dramatically altered the course of the game for no good reason.
If you want to have a zero tolerance policy on players touching refs, then refs need to never put their hands on players (outside of breaking up a fight). This ref wants to be able to put his hands on players and gets pissy when his unasked for help is rejected.
He doesn't have the temperament to be a worthy official.
