kevin kelley's (no punt guy) new thing

a few things.

1) the first onside kick, the rules have changed so that if the ball is kicked directly into the ground then the opposing team can call fair catch so that play is gone. not sure if HS has gone to this rule though
2) the team was offsides on at least 2 of the kicks
3) the formation is now illegal in HS on almost every kick they tried in the video
4) the penalty is now in place for hitting a defenseless player
5) contact before the ball has gone 10 yds is not allowed so a couple of those that was a penalty not called
6) players must be within 5 yds of LOS on kick so that is not allowed either

as for the pitch all over thing.

when you run a qb pitch play they know the D is most often going to be coming from 1-2 angles. you add in down field stuff and now you have 4 directions. add to that the RB
onside kick car crashes have no appeal to me. might be a smart play more often but i want kicking to be less of the game as it is.

nationwide rules.. collisions. 4 men on a side. 5 yds behind kicker are all national rules.

but offsides was always a rule and there were 2 or 3 of those too.

Not sure if it will work or not but one way to look at it is that now all of the defenders downfield can't gang tackle. If they know the receiver may pitch the ball they have to be aware of where the other offensive players are. Again, I am not going to claim this is some type of fool proof plan, but Coach Kelley seems like a high risk-high reward type guy and this definitely falls into that category.

Kelly's onto something. I went into the article expecting a rugby-style offense that is predictable and prone to TO's. But neither appears to be the case -- he only runs the rugby-style plays 2-3 times per game. So it's not a "hook-and-latteral" offense. It's just a philosophy of incorporating plays into the offense that are statistically productive. Other than potential TO's, I don't see the downside to this with SU's personnel since it keeps defenses guessing and does not require elite talent.
