I'm not complaining because obviously the outcome of the game turned out great, but I'm just curious what people think about the strategic decision to kick the field goal up 10 at the end of the game.

Would it have been a greater risk/reward to go for it on 4th down from the 2 yard line, potentially go up 17 which would have been game over, and worst case scenario make Wake go 99 yards the other way? Because two TDs still beat you and you always run the risk of the kick getting blocked.

Just curious if others felt the same way at that particular moment.

I'm with you - I wasn't a fan of it. It seemed like a block there seemed more likely (and more disastrous) than just running up the middle and getting stuffed if you didn't get in the end zone.

To say nothing of the fact that it was an extreme angle kick from close that was a difficult make (even though he made it).

It's interesting because down 10 coaches will usually go for TD FG because they are morons. Making it a 13 point lead forces them to make the correct play. I vote go for it.

I felt that after having a first and goal from inside the two and being denied three times, I was fine with the decision. We needed to come away with points.

Wasn't it a 4th and 6 or 7?
There was an illegal formation penalty (or something similar) that backed it up 5 yards.

The penalty was on 2nd down, it ended up being 4th and goal from the two and a half yard line.

I was yelling from my seat What are you doing. FG right there does absolutely nothing for you except run the risk of getting blocked. Going up 13 is pointless at that point. Only bad can happen from that. These are the small mistakes HCSS continues to make, and most of them have to do with being overly over the top conservative.

How does the FG do nothing for you? It forces the opponent to score 2 touchdowns to win. That's pretty significant with less than 3 minutes to play.

NO, you kick the FG. Not gonna leave WF a chance to drive only 40 or 50 yards and kick a quick FG and get points and then leave themselves time to recover an onside kick and still have a little time on the clock. Make them go the length of the field and score a TD and take the FG option off the board

Listen SS had a good game except for the TO in the 3rd quarter and this decision. He should have gone for it on 4th down. Going up 13 wasn't worth going for the kill shot. SS had a brain fart and it didn't matter, but still in the future you gotta go for it next time.

They would have started at the 2 yard line. Let them go 60 yards and kick a FG that would kill time. Wake missed a 50 yd FG they would have had to go 65 yards with 1 TO to even get in FG range.
By going up 13 we kicked off and gave them field position of the 30 yard line.

I was against going for 3. I didn't think I could be more upset about anything in that game after they punted with 4th and less than 1 with about 5:50 to go in the game. A first down there puts the game on ice. But, SS won playing the game his way, so ...

Did you see the WF get all pissy and slam his helmet when his missed that 50 yarder?
:noidea:

Hey it worked this time. Would have liked to see the response if they blocked it and brought it to the house. Pump the ball in and put it out of reach. You need 1 yard. Too much unneeded risk.

I really would've liked to have seen an attempt to punch it in. Think the boys could've done it.

Me too. We had the momentum. The guys were 20 yards in front of me they were fired up. We had a much better chance of pumping it in and ending it right then and there then of getting stopped. Especially if they fed Fredricks

It would've really given the boys a massive boost. And completely demoralized WF.

So an extra point is now unneeded risk? I don't think so
