You won't read about Melvin's love for Ernie Davis in this article but recently he requested an Ernie Davis jersey. Back in September of 2009 he visited SU. Toured the football offices and upon his return home requested that his team watch the Express as a team building experience. He was very much interested in hearing from SU but we were set with our recruiting of running backs. At the time Tyree Smallwood was in the fold. I would have loved to see Gordon with 44 on his back for SU but it wasn't meant to be.

Those are some serious numbers on 9 carries. We might've missed on a great one. :bang:

remember you posting about the kid at the time - stinks they didn't feel there was enough room to bring him in. Bright side is that now the RB depth chart is MUCH improved over where it was then - even without this kid.

That's true but this kid is great on reverses and swing passes and once he gets out in space...fuggedaboutit...the closest player we have to him is Broyld.

Melvin had 112 yards in 9 carries earlier in the season when Ball got hurt. The week before last he had two carries, one for 56 yards and a TD in the begininng of the Penn St game and a 9 yard run in the 4th quarter, that's the only touches he got. He would have given us a true play maker.

But at least we have Smallwood, who projects as a Heisman Trophy candidate for next season. Oh wait...

to be fair - I'm pretty sure Cali made them promise to hold a spot open in case Jamere Knox ever made it to campus - so the true playmaker slot wasn't really available

He is a freshman this year so if he Red Shirted in 2011, he visited as a Sophmore? It might have been a long shot since he is from Kenosha WI which is about an hour away from Madison. But man this kid would have looked good in Orange.

He was a junior in 2009, senior in 2010, redshirted in 2011, is playing as a rs/freshman now. When he made his trip here it was September 05, 2009 before his first high school game. We lost that day to Minnesota 23-20 in OT. A teammate, Trae Waynes made the trip with him, he was a junior who had not yet played high school ball. He was also interested in SU. He ended up at Michigan St and red-shirted in 2011.

Former SU QB Dave Warner is on the MSU staff and gladly offered him a scholarship when SU didn't show any interest. Should the QB coaching position ever open here, Dave should be on the short list, if interested.
