Kiyan

Kiyan Anthony shows touches of great at times but also can look slow and lethargic. Needs to get stronger which will come in time.
Picture him with an additional 10-15 pounds and more quickness. He will be good.
One thing is for sure, he likes his jersey un-tucked haha! After he made his first three today as he was getting back, he pulled his jersey out purposely. He does this regularly.
Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t players expected to have shirts tucked in or face a penalty?
Small thing, I know. Was nice to see the team squeak out a win.

Needs to get muchhhh faster and stronger

Not sure he'll ever be quicker but agreed about the strength

Really did feel Kiyan played under control today. Made a bunch of great extra passes. Found the corner guy a ton of times, whether it be Betsey or Kingz. Even defensively, he stayed in front of his guy a bit more than usual. Hopefully more of the same to end the season.
Yes in the jersey. I seen this countless times, as well as the ref telling him to tuck. I admit it almost annoys me a bit. Just tuck it in and keep it there like everyone else.

Looked like the birth of a Team Leader today!

He had intangibles and gifts from birth others will never have, but he has to put double effort in to those things he was not gifted with. If he grows a little height (not an impossibility) I could see him becoming an excellent college 3. My whole life I’ve been asking for two more inches, at this point I pass my wish to Kiyan and apologize to my fiancé.

He definitely does the untucking at his earliest opportunity. If a ref is focused on it you need to tuck it back in.

I may be in the minority on this but it really doesn’t bother me. I think some players can be in their own head on some small things that make them comfortable.

My son pitched throughout college with his right sleeve pulled over his shoulder because he didn’t like the feel of the sleeve hanging down when he pitched. It technically was not allowed but in all the games he pitched in regular season, conference championships, NCAA Regionals there was only 1 ump at one game at the University of Houston that cared to enforce the rule. No other coach or player ever complained.

I personally cannot stand having my shirt touch my right collarbone - I know that is weird but I have been this way since I was a teenager and if I think about it I keep pulling my shirt so I can’t feel it.

That’s what she said

He was excellent yesterday. Not gunning helped. Sadly I need to see him stack a few games before I'm on board totally.
Agree. Also sick of hearing about “ The Virginia Thing.” He is a freshman who has struggled. If his last name was Smith, nobody would even know he didn’t get into the game. Instead Autry and Kiyan have to deal with ridiculous questions about it.

That’s a problem then, because he really needs to be quicker and have a much tighter handle.Other tools are there to be a good player.
Just like football, it’s very difficult to become quicker or faster. But lateral quickness can be improved more than straight line quickness by various drills, how you center your weight, footwork, etc. JJ was always quick, but had poor technique on defense. I would say he approved his lateral quickness, or at least his ability to defend in the last few years. Hopefully Kiyan can become a serviceable defender.

If kiyan is hanging around
Yes, that’s the point. His dad has been so invested in Kiyan playing here but he knows Red needs to be replaced. I know it may not be his “place” to chime in on coach decisions; on the other hand, he is certainly one of the biggest supporters SU basketball has ever had. I would think his opinion would mean something.

But perhaps he is entirely hands off. I certainly don’t know.

Something good to know:

Kiyan’s work with Harris refined his game. But his father flying into town for a few days is what brought his swagger back.

Carmelo flew to Syracuse so he could talk to Kiyan and shoot around with him in the aftermath of his benching. Kiyan said that Carmelo’s been in a similar spot before, when teams hesitated to give the former NBA great new contracts due to his declining performance. Kiyan felt the same way in that he needed to earn his way back onto the court. Carmelo showed him the path.

“He never lost confidence in me,” Kiyan said of his father. “He’s the main guy that helped me play the way I did today.”

Would the old Marquette Bo Ellis jerseys be allowed ? Those were great!

I disagree with those who are saying Kiyan needs to get quicker, He is probably our second best player (after Starling) at being able to dribble and get around his man. He gets to the rim with regularity. He is quick enough. Definitely needs to get stronger and more consistent.

I think people see him on D and think he isnt quick enough, but I think that is more an issue of strength to fight around screens and experience to know whether to go high or low around screens.

Kingz is our most efficient player off the dribble. Starling and Kiyan have too many empty possessions.

Longer post... so kudos to anyone who reads the whole thing. When Kiyan actually gets going he is one of the few players on the team that knows how to "hunt" their offense. I actually think Kingz is similar if he allowed himself to "hunt". The problem that Kiyan has right now is that he is not strong enough to be as slow as he is. He's also 18 years old. If he can continue to progress theres no reason he cant score 16-20 a game in later seasons. Defensively he needs to improve as almost every Freshman does. But he has the polish to his game that is rare he just needs to continue to change his body so his athleticism and strength can catch up.

To be clear he was outright bad for a month there and at times has been unplayable... Im not saying he's a starter-level player now. Just advocating that even looking at JJ and George neither of them are as offensively gifted as Kiyan can be. Not sure if thats a spicy take but I think it will age well. Basically Kiyan at JJ's age and maturity I think can be a very well rounded offensive player. Jaron Pierre of SMU is actually a great comp for what you want Kiyan to potentially turn into.

I believe he should be involved. Just like other donors are currently involved in picking the coach and the chancellor. Carmelo is incredibly intelligent, and I see him with a seat on the BOD in the future. We need all of our Melo's in this new money world. But he is Syracuse royalty also.

Dude needs to stop hoisting 3's unless completely open. It worked last night but at 24%, I'd like him to focus on what he does well... 52% from 2.
Yeah, with freshmen I say don't ever count on a good 3 point percentage. That just seems to be a difficult level to make a jump to.

That isn't to say you don't want them taking good three pointers, is the offense worked in to the shot you want, an in rhythm wide open clean 3.

Kiyan's problem is he takes threes that aren't that, and I'm not going to chart it, but I'd guess he's probably 35ish percent on the good looks and 10% on the bad ones.
