Kyle McCord: Drafted by Eagles / Rd 6 Pk 181

Had a chance to watch Kyle McCord's performance from Saturday, after DVR'ing it from the rerun on NFL network.

Game was weird. Philly sat a BUNCH of key players, including several starting caliber OL, and offense for both teams was pedestrian.

Philly also played two QBs -- DTR and McCord. And alternated them back and forth in both halves, which is a weird way to get either QB into the flow of the game. I think the intent was for the team to move McCord "up" so that he was getting run with the 2nd stringers, instead of with the 3rd / 4th / 5th stringers like in the first preseason game, to get a more accurate gauge on his capabilities.

During the first series he played, which came midway through the second half, Philly established the run and Cleveland couldn't stop it. Despite playing some 2nd string RB, they were consistently opening holes, and the playcalling kept the ball on the ground. Once they got into the red zone, McCord threw the ball twice, and had a TD pass on a slant, where the receiver got inside the CB for a relatively easy score.

The announcers were speculating about whether the Eagles would play McCord for the rest of the game, and he started the 3rd quarter [but then they went back to DTR, in the alternating fashion described above]. McCord strung together a couple of first downs, and had three consecutive compleitions at one point to some random WR struggling to make the team. The drive bogged down and resulted in a punt.

Then they went back to DTR, then McCord later on. As the game progressed into the 4th quarter, McCord started having players further down the roster out there, and the results slipped a bit. On one play, he hit a WR in coverage, and the ball popped up for an INT, but it was nullified by a Cleveland penalty.

DTR threw a pick six, and then sat the rest of the game, leaving McCord to finish up the game in mop up duty. Things got sloppy, but I think it had more to do with the personnel than McCord. At one point, there was a Cleveland offsides penalty, so 1st and 5, and Philly couldn't convert. They had a run for no gain. Then a quick pass out to the RB on the left side in space, that should have gone for 10+ yards but the RB botched the catch. Then McCord had two consecutive incompletions, turning the ball over on downs.

He got flushed from the pocket a couple of times, and forced to throw the ball away [just like at SU]. He also had a "tush push" run on 3rd down, and in true Eagles fashion picked up the first down easily.

Overall, it was a markedly better performance from the first preseason game, but it was an up and down performance. I saw from one of the posts over the weekend [and I was scrollling fast, so might have misread] that McCord threw a pick six, but it turned out that was DTR. Was relieved it wasn't Kyle.

He's been solid tonight. Some real good throws. Also, it's clear the Eagles have designed some plays to enable him to roll out and throw on the run.

Assuming they keep three QB's, he's clearly #3 now.

BTW, I've caught some glimpses of the Cowboys-Atlanta game. Alijah Clark had two serious defensive impact plays that I saw.

I have some doubts he's #3. I'd have loved for Kyle to do well in preseason, but it hasn't happened, and if the Eagles really need an emergency QB, I'd prefer DTR right now. He'll be on the practice squad if no one else claims him. I can think of worse places.

If you're a rookie on the PS, you get paid $13 K a week. $17K if you have more than 2 years of experience.

You're right--there are definitely worse ways to make a good living.

As an Eagles fan right now, these preseason games are just god awful. On the bright side, they are awful for all the right reasons. I could only bear to watch any of it because of Kyle. But the Jets finding a way to lose, preseason or not, is always good for a chuckle.

There seems to be some concern/mystery about Tanner McKee’s availability for Week 1. He injured a finger on his throwing hand recently. They’ve said it is a non-surgical injury, but he has kept his right hand in his sweatshirt pocket anytime the media has had eyes on him using only his non-throwing hand to hold things. After the game, Sirianni was non-committal about his availability for the opener. Birds may need a vet for QB2 until McKee is ready.

Personally I thought being drafted by Eagles was a double edged sword
Great to play for your hometown team, not so great to be with a team with a star quarterback and a damn good backup.
Kyle playing much worse than expected
Have to see where he ends up

He was not good. Not sure any other team would have been impressed if/when Eagles say bye. Very surprised how bad he has looked.

McCord’s generally poor outing in the preseason is surprising and unfortunate.

While I believe he’s much better than he’s shown, now I can’t help but wonder how much of the offense’s success last year was Jeff Nixon’s schemes.

If that’s the case, maybe the offense will allow Angeli to pick up where McCord left off.

Or a strong WR core.

Some of the catches made last year by wideouts was damn impressive.

I don't think Kyle is a bad QB. I think he is pressing, however, and it is impacting his play.

I think McCord played okay. I watched the coach's news conference and he seem satisfied. He did lose his confidence late in the 4th quarter.
