Laray Smith Article

Last Saturday, Smith traveled to Storrs, Conn., for UCONN’s junior day.
“I had a very good time up there,” he said. “They showed me a lot of love. They have very nice facilities, nice modern stuff, like the weight room. They also have a good communications program, which is what I want to major in.”
1 out of 3 ain't bad!

Do some of these kids not realize we are one of the top communications schools on the country?

Glad he's visiting Syracuse, though. He's one of the kids we HAVE to land. Lock down New York.

I feel like most of the athletes that are interested in Communications get put in CRS and not Newhouse, though.

I've read where Rutgers recruits say the same thing about the communications program there. I've also read that Newhouse isn't exactly the easiest place to get into. Reading between the lines, maybe what these kids are saying is UConn or Rutgers has a "good enough" communications program.

Most athletes can't get into Newhouse. I don't know of Rutgers' Comm school has the same restrictions. Newhouse's acceptance rate is like 5-6% and they don't pander to athletes.

Hence "good enough". Just Saying.

I TA'ed for someone last year who transferred to Syracuse after like 3 years at Rutgers just for the Newhouse Degree.

“I want to go into an offense in college that moves fast and takes advantage of speed,” Smith said.

Hopefully that's what the staff is working on this offseason. Believe Marrone mentioned that they were going to look at some of the top offenses in the country for ideas on how to improve the offense. With Hunt / Broyld as the current heirs apparent it could make sense to take advantage of that athleticism and the dome with an offense that moves fast and takes advantage of speed.

Just to give some perspective, one of my buddies transferred in from Washington with a 3.9 after his freshman year and couldn't get into Newhouse. Most end up doing CRS or IR for sure though. It's funny to have a situation in which having the best program around is a disadvantage for some things...

It's not so hard for a reasonably good student to transfer in after two years. I've heard of people getting in to Newhouse before their Junior years with a 3.3 GPA.
