Largely an Overreaction

Wolves aren’t out for Tommy as much as they are for wanting to see better progress on Offense.

how many seasons do we have to see a stagnate offense before we can start questioning things?

we all should be worried after Saturday.

our defense is going to be special...our offense needs to step it up.

lol. I didn't say we couldn't question things or that we shouldn't be worried (esp about the O). I think we need to wait a few games to see if the OL sorts itself when it gets Davis back. I'm really worried that TD didn't use the offseason to get better at all the stuff he struggled with last year. He looked better running - but there was a a lot to wonder about.

Wasnt last year, Tommys first starting, the throwaway year though?

Every team can find a reason to say this every season. I respect your POV but I've been making excuses for this team for too long.

Just as this is an "exhibition" season it also can be viewed as a crap shoot in which anything can happen and chances can be taken.

Take them.
Personally, I prefer throw away seasons like the one true frosh Sam Howell had last year.

I'll repost this from another thread, in shortened form. This year:

- Players should always play to win. You get hurt, games too hard to do otherwise
- Fans should place the emphasis on getting better and finding improvements. What the hell is a w/l record in this environment? You think this is a fair deal - during a pandemic, crazy schedule, etc? If fans treat this year like all the others, they are going to work themselves up into a frothy mess for no reason. It's not worth it. We're not in contention this season (whatever that means anyways). Use this year to get better for next season.
- Coaches should do a bit of column a and a bit of column b

(I suspect that most rational fans are in agreement with the above, IMO)
I don't see why this isn't the same prescription for every season, regardless of the broader circumstances. Players should work to improve and play to win. Coaches should coach the players to improve and be in position to succeed while at the same time casting an eye on the future. Fans should cheer on the team and hope for success. In the end, sports are entertainment for the fans. We don't impact the team's improvement from week to week. The season is being played, so it should be treated as any other. Does this mean I'm not a rational fan?

It's about expectations. Why do they shift after we lose? Is that rational?

Seems like most fans who posted after the loss had more of a "we should secretly be very, very good and win all of our games with a top 10 offense" and were surprised at the lack of growth. I think UNC didn't get better in the offseason either. They just started out better.

For the record, when I said throwaway, I was talking about the amount of times that Tommy would have to scramble to his right. Hey ohhhhh.

In reality, I meant throwaway for fan expectations, at least for me. If this was a normal year, with the schedule we were supposed to have, my expectations were going to be pretty high. 7-8 wins at least (winning the BC opener tipping that to 8).

But given the new schedule, the opt outs, the general disruption of all of it (some of which was unique to us), my expectations went immediately to the crapper and I just want us to use this time to build something special for 2021. Should be a lot more pieces in place, including Bleich.

I'll never again allow myself to believe we'll get a non-grad transfer who is immediately eligible. Even if his parents live in Syracuse and are given 4 months to live from Sep to Dec. Sorry kid, wrong school for that request.

We should include the quick kick as one of our better plays in the playbook this year

Meh. Tommy already has the wolves out for him even when hes leading the team in rushing and didn't throw one ball into traffic that could have been picked.

That was a good team we played and somehow only had 3 points at half. The collapse was inevitable. If the D plays well against Kenny Pickett things might get on track next week.

I do wonder which games will be this years BC/Maryland where they don't show up and it gets ugly in 1Q though. Don't think it will be this Sat.

Tommy needs to start firing balls into traffic and show a pulse, a slower, relaxed, pulse where he is street ballin a bit. In the end, you can't steal 2nd, keeping a foot on first. So what if he throws a few picks. They will open him up and be better learning/teaching points than that robotic throw away down the sideline. Lastly, this isn't the week to look for a shor against a qb; Pickett is talented and fearless.

Honestly, I get what you are trying to say. BUT, I have a hard time believing that this team would have beat BC if they played like they did on Saturday. At some point, we have to stop considering seasons "throwaway" seasons even for the fan base. Our QB is a junior in his second full year of starting. He's been in the system for 3 years and our coaches STILL DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE HIM PROPERLY.

BC had an all new staff, lost a few key players. Of course they gained a few key players via transfer because the NCAA seems to love them when it comes to immediate waivers.

UNC was a much better team who was already in their system.

Some people don't agree, but I believe our 2 running backs being gone hurt us.

I think we'd be 2-0 right now. BC and Rutgers. But that's an opinion I can never prove.
