Cheyton Pine lands offer from North Carolina
JAMES CITY – Lafayette outside linebacker
Cheyton Pine received his 15th college football offer Wednesday morning, this time to the University of North Carolina.
Lafayette coach Andy Linn made the announcement as interest continues to be high for the junior pass rusher.
Since January, Pine has received offers from numerous Division I schools, with the most interest coming from programs in the Atlantic Coast Conference. To date, The 6-foot-3 outside linebacker holds offers from Pittsburgh, North Carolina State, Virginia and Syracuse. He also has had interest from Virginia Tech, and Notre Dame, but no official offer has been made.
“This means a lot,” Pine said. “It’s a good school and they really like my length and size.”
North Carolina has had a good history of recruiting outside linebackers from Lafayette High School. Lawrence Taylor starred with the Tar Heels from 1978-1981 before moving on to a Hall of Fame career in the National Football League with the New York Giants.
Pine had a breakout campaign last fall, leading Lafayette to another Bay Rivers District championship and a berth in the 3A state title game. He posted 46 tackles, including 10 for loss as a third down, pass-rush specialist for the Rams. He was a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball with six sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
In the last month, Pine has been a hot commodity amongst Conference USA teams. He received offers from East Carolina University and the University of Charlotte. He also holds offers from the Southeastern Conference powerhouse Georgia, Old Dominion, Toledo, Buffalo, Marshall and James Madison.
Pine said he will spend the summer visiting schools and attending camps to prepare for the 2015 season. Next month he will visit Notre Dame, another ACC school. In July, he has scheduled trips to Marshall and Georgia.
The Lafayette High standout said that he hopes to announce his college decision before the Rams season opener on Sept. 4 at Huguenot. The Top 5 teams on his radar as of right now are Georgia, Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Syracuse and North Carolina State.
