Class of 2022 LB Ryan Russo (PA) Visiting

I don't know why he doesn't have more offers but in general the portal has had a direct effect on the number of HS seniors offered. I think there will be a large number of unrecruited kids attending prep school or JUCOs this Fall.
Yup. Agreed. That seems to be the biggest early result of the portal.

Question between him and the LB from NY which do you think would be a better take?
I don’t think Barrett is really an LB. He plays DE almost exclusively in his film and almost all the plays are passing plays where he rushes the QB. He might be able to be converted into an LB but even at 220 pounds, he doesn’t seem to me to run like we like our LBs to run.

To me, he is a DE who is going to have to do some work to get bigger to get on the playing field. Would be a pass rushing specialist early. I think he is fast enough to occasionally switch to LB on selected plays but i think he is a DE.

Russo is a born LB. Looking at his film, I was struck by his quickness to the ball and his relative slightness. He looked skinny on some of the plays and much better filled out on others. Not sure if they included some old film in that or if it was just the angle. But he might be more like 205ish right now. I think his frame looks good and he will fill out nicely and I really like his overall athleticism. It really stood out on the hoops highlights.

If it were up to me, I would want Russo more. Surprised WVU is talking about using Barrett at their bandit position. Maybe it makes sense for their scheme. I don’t see him at LB in our scheme and certainly do not see him playing rover for us. Now Russo at rover….that might be a good fit.

This guy reminds me of the guy we recruited from PA a couple of years ago who had a ton of tackles, but not much of an offer list and ended up going to a smaller school.

Who was the PA linebacker from a year or two ago that we tried to sign? Similar mold player as this kid.

Suter? A safety?

one would think the coaches have a much better idea on the true weight/height of these guys and if they can play the positions then see them in.

Seems to fit the rover back role, which is more lb/safety hybrid than slot corner in this scheme

Yep kid could be rover if he can cover or grow into LB
Tackling machine from a great PA program

Jason Henderson and Old Dominion.

Had 80 tackles as a frosh and was a Conference USA All-Freshman and a PFF True Freshman All-American in 2021.
Seems like he picked the right school because he wouldn’t have been starting here this past season.

Russo is going to Rutgers as a PWO. Appears we had size concerns.

I have had some issues with player identification and evaluation for WRs. Maybe TEs and OL. With this staff, I think it is clear they know how to identify LBs who will do well in our system. If we didn't want to offer him, I am good with that.

Too bad it can't be both. Always love to see NYS kids play for Syracuse, and it would also be good to have some connection to that part of PA, and that school in particular. He's from PA. If PSU doesn't get who they want, James Franklin can walk in the door signing day and take any kid from PA that he wants.

After the Bryce Mostella situation? Let’s just see about that.

I have a buddy who was an All-State online at McDevitt. But he was like 3 inches too short to get any D1 attention.

Hadn't seen that when I posted. Just had to google it when I saw your reply. Not a good situation.

PA blue blood program. I hope we can close the deal.
