yep, and they play Rutgers this weekend. Was hoping that Leach would take advantage of Rutger's inexperienced defensive backfield, but they may have some of their own problems to solve right now.

Want to fire Mike Leach? Here's his contract with Washington State

In the 11 pages of contract embedded at the bottom, the most important clause when it comes to whether WSU will be firing Leach anytime soon is Section 4.6.1, which includes language that compels the school to pay Mike Leach 60 percent of his $2 million base salary for the remainder of the contract. (You might remember that Leach got a raise last August, but that only amended his media compensation to make his total annual guaranteed payout $2.75 million -- it appears the base salary remained the same.)

Leach's contract runs for four more years after this one through 2019, meaning if he is fired at the end of the season, the school appears to owe him $1.2 million per year -- $4.8 million total.

When you consider the money it would cost to make Leach go away, plus the money it would cost to hire a replacement, combined with the currently insolvent state of the athletic department ... simply put, without a large donation from a wealthy donor who really wants Mike Leach out the door, Washington State won't be able to afford to fire Leach anytime soon.

If you're convinced it's only a matter of time before Leach is shown the door, about the best you'll be able to hope for is Bill Moos electing not to roll over his contract next January, cutting that buyout by $1.2 million at the end of 2016.

but, but, but he's from a great coaching tree and has a cool name for his pass-happy offense. Doesn't that count for anything in the win column?

Leach's personal failure is not necessarily an indictment of his offense. Just because Leach may not work out there doesn't mean his offense wouldn't work here. That's pretty much all anyone's ever been arguing.

That's the right way to describe it.

he will end up at some backwater naia school like mumme eventually

no reason to hire him any more. you can hire someone who learned the offense without having to hire someone insane enough to come up with it. like TCU

The dude is crazy but you cannot argue against his system. With crap players they had the 2nd best O in conference and the #1 passing O.

The big question is do you have to be nuts to run the O? Mumme, Leach, Holgerson...

Vince Lombardi's tenure with the Redskins was mediocre, therefore his system was bunk and should have been ignored. #boardlogic

If Leach is cut loose, it would make sense for UCF to give him a look to replace the retiring O'Leary. Close to the Keys, talent in-state to run the offense, and not exactly a gauntlet to face in the AAC.

If you believe that his system on offense is legit - that it has done enough over the years to be proven and replicated - then you have to question why his defenses have been so mediocre to poor. And why his success on offense hasn't produced more W's.

I get why we'd want to replicate the production - but there's a lot to question as well. This horrible loss notwithstanding.

This is his 4th year at Washington State and his offense put up 17 points against Portland State.

his defenses only practice against his offenses. something to be said for a defensive coaches who hire an air raid OC. the defensive coach can overcome some of the problems of only practicing against a team that throws all day

you can run out of the air raid and should if only so your defense practices against it.

the guy's 96-69 with 10 bowl appearances in 14 years fwiw

Yeah - that's fine. I'm just trying to offer some push back to the "Leach is untouchable" meme around here.

I'd take his offense in a second - esp if we get a Shafer D to go along with it. ;)

Leach has made his mark, look at the assistants that have gone on to HC gigs as well as the guy at East Carolina who is their OC, he will be a HC next year as well. It's really tough to stay current and or on top. That and WSU is a very tough spot to win, very very difficult to recruit there. Their relevance has kind mirrored Syracuse. Boise St as well as Utah taking a lot of kids from Cali with checkered pasts has not helped them either nor has the fact the amount of people recruiting their old hot beds. ( Sound familiar) Leach hasn't been able to find any answers on defense. Pullman, WA is brutal and when kids are given options it will lose 9 times out of 10.

Leach also doesn't give a , he's not PC, he's smart, rubs many the wrong way and I don't think he caters to kids like many do either. In addition, he's always marched to his own tune. Good for him. I think WSU is his last gig either way, or I could see him going smaller and out in left field even more.

I would still let him coach my football team any day of the week but I like guys that are smart and think on their own, just me I guess. Like I said, WSU is a tough tough place to win. Not saying there is any excuse to losing to PSU but happens

If you're Leach, why would you continue working post WSU (whenever that tenure might end)? He just stroked his brokerage/retirement accounts BIG TIME and I'm sure that had something to do with him going cross country to take this gig.

Why deal with the stress? Write a book, make a few more bucks and go sip Mai Tai's while watching the sunset down in the Keys.

he's not the first coach to take some time off from college, go back to a school with lots of disadvantages, and fail

one comes to mind that used to be relevant to us

Exactly, I think he liked the WSU job because it was the red headed step child of the PAC 12, it suits his personality and he's from Wyoming as well ( I think he likes the middle of nowhere) other than Key West. It seemed that he always had just enough defense to win games at T Tech or too much offense. He just can't stop anyone on defense in the PAC 12, offenses are high powered or super big and athletic.

Leach has left his mark on the game without a doubt regardless of WSU outcome, he has definitely become a bit of a dinosaur because I don't think he caters to kids like many of the newer coaches. His next job will be coaching high school in Key West in shorts and flip flops, riding his bike to and from practice. I liked him when he was on SIRIUS with Jack Arute.

and yes he's laughing all the way to the bank and would also say he's smarter than 9.5 out of 10 football coaches

That was the one thing I just didn't get about him taking that WSU job. You go from Key West, living the dream, loving that life...to Pullman, Washington. About as polar opposite in every way that you can get. Shows you some of that cuckoo mindset of his.

But I do love watching him on the sideline, with his little folded up piece of paper, calling plays, going for 500 yards through the air.

There are a number of people on our board who would like him to be the 2nd coach we steal from Wazzu.
