Leonard Hamilton returning to FSU next season

Leonard Hamilton plans to return to FSU next year, say’s there’s more work to do. Don’t hear any clamoring from fans about him getting out despite a losing record thus far. Wonder why?
Because Florida State fans don't care about basketball as we saw with their g-league esque attendance last game

Basketball at FSU isn't woven into the fabric and culture of the university and city the way it is at SU. They are more concerned with how many cups of coffee Norvell has had on any given day than when LH is retiring.

It makes a lot of sense why they probably are OK with him coming back, football priority aside.

2017 - NCAAT 2nd round
2018 - Elite 8
2019 - Sweet 16
2020 - ACC reg season champs and legit NCAAT champ contender but COVID
2021 - Sweet 16
2022 - down year went 17-14 and 10-10 in ACC

And he’s not embarrassing FSU and their AD in press conferences.

When's the last time Syracuse was a top 4 seed in the NCAA tournament? 2014. Heck they have not even been a top 8 seed since 2014.

Florida St was a top 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021. (I know there was no tournament in 2020, but at 26-5 they were going to be a #1 or #2 seed). And in 2018 they made the Elite 8 when they were only a 9 seed That's a top 4 seed 4 of the last 7 years -- and a #1 seed level team just 3 years ago. Syracuse would dream of that kind of success at this point.

Hamilton has earned a longer leash at this point than Boeheim, based on much more success recently. Simple fact. That being said FSU probably looked more closely at relieving him than our admin did for Boeheim.

Or maybe the few Florida St fans are happy that they have a coach that between 2017-2021 had them as either a top 4 seed or an elite 8 team every year... 5 years in a row.

If Syracuse had anywhere near that level of success between 2017-2021, there would only be limited heat on JB for the last 2 years.

Or maybe FSU is worried about recent significant positive results. Something Hamilton has delivered on compared to Boeheim.

Could be but I would guess based on that crowd that just really don’t care that much

That's impressive.

My buddy is an FSU alumn. The only time he cares about basketball is when they're making a run in the ncaa tournament.

I certainly agree the market doesn't care as much, and that reduces the heat on Hamilton, But he deserves less heat than Boeheim irrelevant of fanbase size and passion.

Florida St is not a passionate market whether things are going good or bad. It's more a casual market, with much lesser diehards than Cuse. But if you ask their far fewer diehards (who would be as smart as any diehard in any market -- a diehard is a diehard), I am sure while they are concerned, they are probably less upset than we are with Boeheim -- and justifiably. This is the first time since 2016, that Florida St had a worse year than Syracuse.

I think they were preseason #3 in the ACC.

The league is down I'd expect them to somehow turn it around and be good next year. Another year like this and they might consider someone younger.

And even with a 2nd down year relative to them, they don't have the decades of consistent success that breads the expectation or entitlement.

They also haven't experienced their Head Coach being around for a 2nd set of NCAA penalties and nuking a succession plan that made sense.

Building on that, they are also putting guys into the NBA that are having staying power.

Yes, we have Grant and Oshae and Cole with a cup of coffee and Buddy on a two way... but Hamilton can showcase getting guys into the league as of late.

I know that a lot of people focus on the college resume, but it's just as important to get guys into the league for recruiting (along with NIL, etc, obviously).

Hamilton has done it on the court, done it getting guys into the NBA and is at a school where they prob care more about the spring game vs any college game unless it's into the S16 or later in the tourney.

Gosh… stop it with these facts.

I do think that Hamilton could be struggle in the new NIL and particularly the new open Transfer system.

He has been a good recruiter of freshmen and developming them. There was a lot of draft picks that came out of Florida St since 2015, and they were not all top ranked recruits.

And his system of playing 10-12 deep, everybody 10+ minutes from the beginning probably kept people generally happy and knowing what to expect moving forward. It was not worth sitting out a year to go elsewhere. This same system probably will make it hard to attract transfers who are looking for minutes.

His strength was recruiting and developing middle or upper-middle tier. And retaining players. It might not be recruiting the transfer market which is now arguably as important.
