Lester: Don't Expect Dungey AND Womack to remain at QB

I'm not sure how I feel about this article. Upside - the staff thinks they're good enough athletically to contribute elsewhere. Downside - we're looking at our brand new QBs and already have it in mind that after just one year one might not stick? Probably not uncommon thinking or anything, just feels a little weird since we're going to need a new starting QB after this season.

I feel like Lester is saying that these guys have value beyond playing QB, and if they can better fill some other positional need, then so be it.

Agreed. I think Lester just is more honest than most:

You're going to take your time trying to find a great quarterback, period," Lester said. "Then, once I'm 100 percent sure that he's not a great, great, great quarterback, you (make the decision). It doesn't just happen overnight. I'm not going to have a quick trigger when I think I have two guys who have huge upside."

This article maybe much to do about nothing. Simply said the obvious.

"Lester said he'll be lenient with the mental mistakes in the early going as he understands the transition to college ball is not easy, but added that if he's certain one of the guys will clearly be a program quarterback or that another absolutely will not, he won't be hesitant to move a player."

"They're both smart, athletic and they're into it, but the learning curve of a quarterback is hilarious. It'll get worse before it gets better."

they can't both play qb and lester thinks they can be good at other positions.

fine with me. have the backup qb be a guy who can only play qb.

Last year was the worst year for QB injuries I've seen in 45 years...still 4 QBs IMHO is the max you need on the roster.

The comments below the article are just sad...so many trolls.

i'm fine with taking risk at QB. ohio state has the luxury of insuring themselves there. we need our most talented guys on the field. if an injury blows up the season, so be it

Agree, any time you take two QBs in one class, I hope that they're the type of player that could help elsewhere. Let them compete early, figure out which one is best suited for QB, and move the other one.

I just love this line......
RVAs (routes vs. air) man, they might look great," Lester said, "but then you put them in a live situation and all of the sudden Chuck's bringing blitzes, they're back there patting the ball and you realize you'd be dead right now. I'd be visiting you in the hospital. You'd be eating through a straw."

We need to make that happen in a game more often.Once you put on the pads come game day,you punish your opponents lining up against you..

my Kingdom for the day a Syracuse QB loses the battle to start, to a future 2nd overall NFL draft pick...and ends up being picked #1 in the 2nd round at his adopted position...again.

Man, that scenario seems really specif... OH! Oh! You're talking about Donovan McNabb and Kevin Johnson!

I'm okay with this as long as it doesn't turn into another Ashton Broyld farce "we love you as a football player but we don't know what to do with you." :noidea:

I would assume one might switch positions, but after a redshirt year only? With just Long and Wilson "in front" of them. Seems odd to come out in public and make that statement.

This just means we're at least 2-3 years away from finding a true QB.

This staff needs to find a good QB in the next year.

And it doesn't say much about their recruiting at that position,

I don't think the info here definitively leads one to those conclusions.

I'm jumping to conclusions.

But I think one of the two pans out at QB.

One better. There cupboard is bare now.

And Culpepper will be competing with them in Spring ball. That's 6 QBs on the roster including the walk on after Hunt's eligibility is through. I'm all for depth, but if they can find a suitable position for a good athlete (or two) to contribute (especially on offense), I'm all for it.

all i want is decent qb who doesnt give the game away- is that too much to ask

I don't think that's how it really went down. They loved him as a defensive prospecdt, but Broyld didn't want to play there.

This is exactly what they should be doing, IMO. And exactly what they should continue to do. It's the single most important position, by far. I hope they continue to bring in talented, athletic QBs every year. Let them truly compete, play the best, and hope that the rest are good enough to find another position or another program where they can get another shot. Cold hearted, yup. It is what needs to be done until we can find a true impact talent.

Dungey, Womack, Rex...keep em coming.

This is fine. When's the last time we had TOO MANY talented QBs? More years than not in the past 15 years we've barely had one.

broyld should be a quarterback in a k state/ohio state power spread offense. i don't care what anyone says, he would've been very good

I agreed with that take back in 2012. Would have liked to see what he could have done.
