Let's Adopt Another Team

ill root every week for whoever plays Alabama this week was Ole miss

I first suggested this "sistership" idea during the G-Rob years. My suggestion was the Michigan State Spartans, who have several Syracuse connections, aren't that far away and are doing quite well right now.

- Biggie Munn took his entire staff from Syracuse to East Lansing in 1947 to turn the Spartans into a naitonal power.
- One of them was SU grad Duffy Daughtery, brother of Jean Daughtery whom locals might remeber as the "play lady" on the kiddie show "The Magic Toy Shop, among other things she did on local TV.
- Duffy became the head coach of the Spartans after Munn retired to the AD job and became one of the most famous and best-liked coaches of the 50's and 60's, noted for his sense of humor. "it's bad luck to be behind at the end of a game."
- He was a great friend of Ben Schwartzwalder and their teams often scrimmaged together, a common practice in those days.
- George Perles was good friend of Coach Mac's.
- If Donnie McPherson didn't win the 19987 Heisman, it should have gone to MSU's Lorenzo White. Both were cheated by Tim brown and the Notre Dame aura.
- Both schools were pioneers in using black players.
- Both schools were national powers in the 50's and 60's but faded, primarily due to the additional recruiting requirements of the two platoon era and the resulting supremacy of Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan.
- Both got tired of looking up at those football factories and made comebacks but have had trouble sustaining success. But the Spartans look like they've built their program up to the level it was in the Munn-Daughtery years and are an example to SU as we try to regain our past glory.

Keep in mind this isn't about abandoning Syracuse at all. it's about having another school out there that we also root for. One that is doing better than we are at the moment. It could tide us over until we get good again. it's just a friendly, half-serious suggestion.

This is why I sent my kids to other football power schools. I can root for their schools even though they graduated a long long time ago.

My favorite fbs school is SU.

The second fbs school that I root for is Syracuse. It's also my 3rd.
...and 4th.
...and 5th.
...and 6th.
...and 7th.
...and 8th.
(And so on)

I always root for my daughters' alma maters, Lafayette (FCS) and Franklin & Marshall (DIII). Unfortunately, they are both 2-3 like Syracuse. No one in our family went to a DII school but my sister's a dean at Minnesota-Duluth so maybe I'll pledge allegiance to them for now. They are also pretty competitive (currently #5 in DII).

I don't watch the pros until the play-offs, and that goes for the SEC, Big Whatever and Big 12-2 as well. You might say my options are limited.

I still have fond memories of Eddie Flumdum .

This is a lighthearted post designed to inject some humor at a bad time we are all facing. Not to be taken seriously. Feel free to move on.
I honestly wasn't trying to be rude towards Baylor. I have a second alma mater as well I just will never root for them as much as Syracuse even if we go 0-12.
With all the upsets in college football good luck to your 2nd alma mater Baylor I just wouldn't ever give up Syracuse even if you were joking as you were.

Root for Baylor? I'd rather go to the dentist every day next week. Never getting behind a school that pumps out extreme religious right graduates like they do. That school is a cult for the closed minded lunatics that think still believe Obama is a muslim. Source: I have family members that are alumni.

Why do people assume that this idea means "giving up" Syracuse? The idea is to adopt a "sister ship"to follow who might be doing better at certain times than we are and thus give us a source of pleasure. It's nothing to do with abandoning Syracuse.

Agreed. I never mentioned anything about giving up on Cusr. Not my intent for my post.

Michigan State played very well yesterday. Best defensive front 7 I have seen in a long time.

When I attended SU for grad school I was able for the first time to witness good football when I saw D McNabb play. Stark contrast in game environment then compared to Baylor at the time. I just remember everybody joking about how bad Baylor was in football all those years. And they were! One game all we had to do was kneel and let the time run out but the RB ran it, fumbled, and the opposing team ran it back for the win. That was about the lowest time in my football life.

I'm not giving up on the Cuse and I know our time will come. I'm the only guy who wears an Orange 44 jersey when I go to a sports bar on the weekends to watch games.

Is it possible that this is your family members' views?

I live 45 minutes from Charlottesville. I could adopt UVa. Besides they have more orange on their uniforms. Oh Lord
I've been trying to adapt UVA for 20 years. This may be the year I do it.
