When we meet both teams will most likely have the same ACC record. They spread out playing time but almost all the players that get meaningful minutes are listed as guards, albeit some with unusual height. They also give a lot of playing time to their 7'3" center. They are pretty careless with the ball. Is this a good matchup for us?

if they are careless with the ball, yeah.

Don't they have two 7 footers? I remember them not being terrible. I am concerned about how we cover those guys. I guess it will be like every other game, if we hit 3's we'll be fine. Otherwise, dogfight.

Yes, but it seems that only one gets minutes. Actually, they have three 7 footers. The three seven footers minutes are 18, 6 and 3. Only one forward gets significant minutes at 22 per game. I guess that their bigs are foul prone. If so, we need to take it to the rack. They look big on paper but reality is different.

They shoot 337 from 3 and turn the ball over 14 times per game. Despite their paper roster they essentially have one big, although he is 7'3". We need to get him out of there. They play at a fast tempo and average 78 points per game.

Rathan Mayes scares me the most on that team...type of guy that can go Darius Lane on us

Just like my CYO team. Each set of players gets 5 minutes of each period. At the end of five minutes we substitute all five so everyone gets equal playing time. Is FSU like that?

Just like JB taught you, equal playing time for everyone.

Do they have any good wins?
They are currently 39 in RPI, while SU is 43. Their SOS is 47 - SU is 29. They are 6-7 vs. the Top 100 RPI (2-4 vs. Top 25). SU is 7-7 vs. the Top 100 RPI (2-3 vs. Top 25).

Their 2 Top 25 wins are UVa (at home) and Florida (in Gainesville). In the ACC, they swept NC State, and split with Clemson. Overall, they are 5-5 in the ACC. They play at Wake on Saturday.

Overall, 2 pretty even teams. Beating them would help us head-to-head if we meet on the bubble.

I think we should be very concerned. Large guys, a shooter who can fill it and a coach who's teams play tough.

A bigger and more talented Georgia Tech. Our 3s better be going down or else we'll struggle to get to 45 points. Xavier Rathan-Mayes is very good also as mentioned above. Their other freshman might be even better, Dwayne Bacon. Two of the best in the country. He's had over 20 the last two games.

they are a sloppy athletic team with multiple bigs. they play helter skelter and when that style is on they can beat anyone, the 2 Fr are tough to defend

They have 4 perimeter players that are very, very good. Bacon, Beasley, Rathan-Mayes and Bookert. All can fill it up. Beasley and Bookert in particular, are who I'm most worried about. Both hit about 40% of their 3's.

Actually Malik Beasley is their other freshman (Rathan-Mayes is a sophomore) and he is outstanding, as is Bacon.
Unlike G.Tech, they play poor defense. As someone posted above, they're very athletic/long but play a very undisciplined kind of game - lots of turnovers and poor ball-handling

oh, and they have one 7-footer who actually plays - Bojanowsky. Their other experienced 7-footer is Ojo and he's out for the year with some kind of injury. Then they do have a young guy who's like 7'3 but he basically never plays.
Bojanowsky is charmin soft (rail-thin) and actually isn't much of a shot blocker or rebounder for his size

Sounds like a great team to zone.

I think we've played them five times since 1990 and we are 5-0.

2-0 in the ACC.

Disclaimer: Past performance does not guarantee future results.
5-1 all-time against FSU. Only loss was in 97 in the NIT, when we clearly had no interest in playing the game.

Right...meant Beasley. Thanks. Anytime Leonard Hamilton is coaching chances are they will be undisciplined and probably underacheivers. I just worry about trying to out-athlete them with too much ISO ball because they have better athletes this year.

I expect we will split with Florida State. If we split with them, beat NC State, Boston College we need 1 more win from Pitt, @Louisville, and @North Carolina to be a lock for the NCAAT.
Even at 9-9 I like our chances but would need to play in the ACCT QFs for lock.
Florida State has a lot of talent on their team they are just sloppy. Bacon is the player we have to keep under control. He is a high volume shooter for FSU. We need just make him take a lot of shots to get his points.

This week off will give our guys a chance to get their legs back. Florida State isn't the best defensive team either which will help but they can score.

Some In-Depth Facts on FSU:
  • Against Zone so far this year they are "average" shooting 164-391 (41.9%) and rank in the 43rd percentile compared to others teams in division one against zone.
  • In transition, they are "excellent" shooting 123-184 (60%) and have totaled 491 points on the year in transition compared to their 1,224 points in the half court
  • Malik Beasley is Excellent shooting 42-92 when declared as "Spotting up". We will have to make him put the ball on the floor.
  • In the short shot clock situations (<4 seconds) FSU is poor shooting 16-68 (23.5%) and 4-41 jump shooting wise late in shot clock. So hopefully we dont see any late BS threes per usual
  • Spotting up as a team FSU is 144-374 (.385) and that is "good" so they are definitely competent as a spot up shooting team.
  • Although, as a three point shooting team, they are 108-335 (.322) Which is below average so hopefully they do not come in raining threes left and right.
  • Fun Fact about FSU, they shoot better being "guarded" (.345) compared to being "unguarded" (.333)

Hamilton doesn't have a clue how to coach offense against a zone IMO. With the talent on that team they should have a lot better record. I'm not guaranteeing a win, but I'll be dissappointed if we lose.
