Let's talk CMU

I watched a good chunk of their game vs OK state and feel compelled to add a few thoughts.

First off CMU has almost no run game. This a combo of a bad run blocking on O and a less then stellar stable of backs. From reading there board it seems they have only 1 Div 1A caliber back and hes to raw/young to make an impact at this point.

From a passing standpoint they looked pretty good. No dominant WR but 3 or 4 guys who looked comfortable catching passes. Almost Wash State light just not nearly as potent.

Defensively they were tough to get a read on as OK State didnt seem to show much and seemed almost like they were going through the motions. CMU's secondary looked pretty good but I dont recall them getting much pressure. You get the impression that guys with elite speed/skill could really bother them ie Estime, Fredericks. To bad Erv is out this would have been a great matchup.

Offensively I think we need more of Fredericks this game vs Morris. This is also the type of game a guy like Lewis and Strickland could have a field day on intermediate routes. I worry a little bit the coaching staff might try and play it safe again and go with the Deleone run run pass punt O for the first half or so. I think this would be a big mistake waiting for a repeat of the big plays a la Wake is unlikely. SU needs to sustain some drives and convert third downs.

Defensively I see a lot of Okie. I think bringing the house every play would be a mistake though. CMU thrived in the intermediate pass game vs OK State and after watching the Wake game im sure there O staff is salivating. Really need the D line to generate some pressure on its own this game and to not allow Rush to escape for big runs which he has the potential to do.

I like SU to win but curious to see how the O and D respond after week. How does the O look with another game under Dungeys belt? Are we to conservatve? Was dissapointed Lester called a run on that third down pass Dungey hit Moore on. Need to be able to open things up at least a little bit.

As for the D, last week clearly exposed a weakness so how do we respond. Any shakeups in the secondary? New blitz looks?

I was scared to death of CMU last year after we'd been lucky to beat Nova and they'd blown Purdue out of their own place, 37-17. I was utterly shocked when we won so easily. We were 2-0 then, too- and wound up 3-9. Nobody knows what is going to happen.

You're wrong, I know what's going to happen. We're going to win by a lot.

(I'm really setting myself up, aren't I).

Hard to say. The D did pitch a shut out in the second half but Wake had two drives moving at will that self inflicted wounds killed when they were getting deep in our territory. One thing for sure the D has to do a better job on third and long. We were atrocious there.

It's almost like the defense was feeling it out in the first half. Bullough kind of alluded to the same game plan in his interview last night.. He said something along the lines of we will watch to see what they do in the first half and look at the trends, then make adjustments in the 2nd. In the second half against Wake it sure seemed like we were getting more pressure. Now, whether that was play calling or just better execution I'm not sure, I would have to go back and watch.

Any stock tips?

I like a staff that can make adjustments. I've seen too many games over the years where what we were doing stopped working but we kept doing it anyway.

The problem with that philosophy is if the other team scores 3-4 TD's in the first half while you're "watching" and your O lays an egg.

Not disagreeing

I wouldn't take coach interviews too literally.
