I know it's early to make a good comparison but here's what I noticed. I don't think I saw Long badly miss any throws, something Hunt may do from time to time. And neither one of the picks was really from a bad decision. I think on the first one he was trying to get it out of bounds and didn't and the second one just a deflection at the line. Hard to fix a guy who makes poor decisions so having someone who throws to the right guy back there is invaluable.

Bottom line is he wasn't missing throws and seems to make good decisions back there. Loved what I saw.

Hunt has the size needed to play MCD's offense which relies on the QB to be able to carry a lot of the running burden. The problem is that he is so wildly inaccurate that we basically had to ditch the passing game. From the look of Long we got today if we run him as much as we ran Hunt he isn't going to make it through the season and I think Lester knows that. The difference is Lester seems to be able to tailor his offense to what Long does really well which is pass the ball and keep the pocket alive. I will say the Oline seems much better at vertical run and pass blocking than the all of the stuff we had been running to the edges of the field.

AJ threw three bad passes, but after he settled down he was accurate. He also threw same darts. Hunt is simply wild, At this point in his career Hunt is what he is and he isn't the future.

AJ is also faster than Hunt. I never liked it when Hunt was our leading rusher - recipe for disaster, which happened.

Agreed. Good to have a OC that utilizes the talent on the field in a positive manner.

OK, so give me some examples of what Lester did that GM didn't?

Really Crusty? You are one of my favorite posters but...the whole offense the way it was run today had a feel that there was a plan. And this was with two qbs that really haven't played. I also had the feeling that we weren't afraid to throw the ball down field.

Only qbs threw the ball

They didn't pitch to heavy guys in the end zone

He called all the plays without going all Cindy Brady looking at the red light
Those trick plays both worked the way they were supposed to. The one thing I did see is that we were throwing downfield.

Considering the competition you have to be excited with what we saw from AJ. For a true Freshman to step into that situation with a depleted roster was a pleasant surprise. He was wild on a couple throws, but had great accuracy on other tough throws. I think today was the first back shoulder pass I have seen since Nassib left. AJ has wheels too. He ran by their ends on multiple occasions. It's just 1 game so I wanted to temper my expectations, but to say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. Kid looks like a gamer. Let's build on that performance.

I felt the same. Felt like there was a flow, and didn't hesitate going downfield, which has been surprisingly effective this year.

Throw to Ishmael.
GM is the one that started Ish. It was Hunt that never threw to him. Ish only had three receptions today so it is not as if he was targeted all day. Difference is also that the passes were accurate.

On other thought here... Coming from the SEC, GMC was looking for a Cam Newton clone for his offense, kind of like Prescott from MSU. Hunt has the physical body type that resembles Newton and some of his running skills. As I remember based on the end of last year Hunt's ceiling could have been Newton's, remember people were talking about him as a top 10 QB for the NFL draft.

This year instead of reaching his ceiling, Hunt regressed to his floor and MCD had no back up plan. I think Hunt pressed too much trying to be Cam Newton and that caused his poor decision making and accuracy issues.

Long doesn't fit the mold of Cam Newton so he was bypassed by MCD but I bet Long will be a great pistol qb like Lester likes to run.

ehhh McDonald never even officially coached an SEC game. He was at Miami 2 seasons ago.

I haven't yet gone back to review the game or chart the plays, but while I felt the game flowing better I could not put it so much on play calling as I could on the execution. They completed [EDIT 58% ]68% of their passes, which were by and large longer passes and they were on target. Receivers got the ball in stride on those same bubble screens. Morris dropping that screen was like Broyld dropping slants.

I thought there were series where people would have gone nuts if GM had called them.

Maybe I will have a different opinion the second time I watch, we'll see.

By the way, the fade on 4th down - really? Why not first or second down? That series was awful.

I do think it was quicker and had a better pace. I can't help but think if Hunt had been in there it would have looked a lot different. We threw 56% and ran 44%, which was a surprise - could not have done that with Hunt.

I reserve judgment on Lester but those two kids were great.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but the trick play on goal to go backfired when we didn't get set. Also, the double reverse worked last week until poor Ben dropped it.

We'll see against Wake ,but I just thought the execution from the kids was much better than with Hunt.

Did it feel like it had a flow because our QB actually completed pass to keep the drive alive which I think is the case.

First 4 times in the red zone we got 6 points. Wasn't that the problem with Mcdonald? Could get yards between the 20's but couldn't execute inside the 20. Didn't see a lot better inside the 20 today. A few penalties, stuffed runs, incomplete passes.

That's what needs to get fixed. We better hope Lester can fix it.

Having said that, I felt very positive about parts of the offense and thought we moved the ball well again. Ishmael is gonna be real good.

I agree on that series and on that fade. I didn't say he was perfect. Just much better.

If you are going back to watch the game, I am truly curious if we were only getting 4 yards a run when FSU had 6 in the box. FSU's defensive gameplan was mind-boggling to me.

People have decided that Lester is a genius. Its what happens when the QB can complete passes and make reads (though Lester, as any OC, greatly reduced the reads needed by the QB). For instance, people forget that they called a 1st and 10 play where the end result was a swing pass to Ameen-Moore. A play people have been screaming about, since why would Ameen-Moore be catching passes?

Also find it funny that people are saying GM wanted a Cam Newton mold guy when the guy he recruited for QB (Edouard) isn't an Adonis.

I am all for Lester, but Wake Forest will be the true test of if anything has changed offensively. Mainly b/c that is when the QB's (hopefully Wilson is back) will have game film on them and the D will plan for them.
