Looking Ahead 2026: Calvin Russell

so In reality he frees up a spot on the fb side.
The NCAA stuff I read about two sports and two rosters it seems like he will count on both roster limits buuuut I'm not 100% sure.

I really hope he doesn’t mess around with basketball. He needs to be totally locked in with football and one of the biggest things is time in the S@C , which wouldn’t happened if he played ball. Just not worth it.

As for playing next year, I think you’ll see glimpses early on and then take on a larger role if he shows he’s capable as the year goes in. WR2 or WR3 is expecting a ton!

If Gill leaves I think WR2 or WR3 is very realistic in my opinion for Calvin Russell in year 1.

I mean we haven’t even seen the kid take a college snap yet? Let’s see how spring ball goes. WR is certainly a position you can play at early, but how many WR1 or WR2’s do the blue bloods have? He has great size and play making ability, but needs to add weight and work on things he hasn’t even seen at the HS level.

Also Calvin Russell has all the ability in the world to work and sharpen his route running and get bigger and stronger in the weight room and then have an explosive and electric freshmen season. Not saying he’d going to Jeremiah smith but let’s not act like he doesn’t have the ability to be a WR1 even as a true freshman if everything clicks and goes well.

are we sure he is committed?

We’ll see — everything I’m saying is just a projection. I’m curious to see how he performs during spring ball. I believe that going through a college nutrition and strength training program will help him improve significantly. He already has a big catch radius and has shown he can make plays with the ball in his hands. I do think he needs to refine his route-running skills, but once he gets bigger and stronger, I believe he can consistently win 50/50 balls as well.

If a 5 star WR recruit like Russell can't come in and start from day one here I would be very surprised. He will have almost 8-9 months of S&C, spring ball and summer camp to get ready. I fully expect him to be a day 1 starter here. If not, well that would be a bit of a disappointment for a recruit of his caliber. In addition, he may only be here 1 year, so why wait? Now, it seems that he will be here longer than that because of his relationship with FB but you get my point with the portal etc

And Gough in the rotation as well. These were two highly rated and sought after WRs. They should definitely see the field.

If anyone brings up Morant and redshirting, they should be banned and give them more time to knit a scarf for their grandchild.

I really think we need te be careful not to burn his redshirt. Hold on, this sleeve is making my fingers cramp (I prefer sweaters).

There is nothing unusual about a true freshman playing immediately. If, Gill, Ross, and Cook were to all leave, much better chance of starting. I’d prefer he’s in the rotation for now. If he wins the job with no one portaling out, that would be tremendous.
