Looks Like Hackett will be available.

Many of you on this board are comical. Doug didn't owe SU anything. He had't gotten an extension and had an opportunity to take a promotion to a job he'd personally enjoy more and make more money. How many of you would pass on that with your current employers? None of you. Cut him some slack and let's lose the sour grapes. He did what was right for him. We'd all do the same. Now back to the task at hand. What do we need from the current staff and how do we turn around from this year's train wreck of a season...

Him leaving had zero to do with his contract. Zero, nada, zip. And he did get the raise he wanted.

Guys, he's made for the NFL and that's ok. I'm personally more worried whether Shafer can get this program back on track after a terrible season. Marone did work a miracle, got us out of the giant hole GROB left us with. And for that, I am thankful.

I'm pretty sure it was explained that Marrone sought an extension for himself *and* his assistants. Which is nice and proves how selfless he is. When the Bills refused he exercised his option to pocket $4 million and walked away, even though his assistants don't have that option and most likely will be replaced by the new head coach. Which is just the breaks. It's amazing, the man really can't lose!

The Bills offered the extension. So the story had to change. Eventually it just got to $4M and I was going to do this no matter what. Unfortunate part is that the assistants who followed him likely knew nothing of this opt out.

Oh, the Bills *offered* an extension?!

I didn't know that.

So he just took the money to walk?!

Haha. Saintly.

The pegulas were stunned. They thought they were keeping him. I wonder if Marrone never thought they'd say yes

Not whining. I could care what he does. All I said in a previous post was that I felt bad for his assistants, who are now without work. I'm summarizing the responses I got

Fair enough. Just reacting and maybe over reacting to the massive thread(s) every week all dedicated to talking about a former coach. I'm not a Marrone lover but I don't dislike the guy either, just amazes me the level of hate for the guy and the obsessiveness.

Q...he was making well over a million dollars a year for well over 5 years. He is set for life...his assistants are not.

He screwed over Cuse, screwed over the Bills and screwed over a bunch of assistants.

Completely understand what you're saying. My post is more about the whole Marrone "thing" as a whole on this board.

Our program sucked sweaty moose balls this year.

Talking about Marrone beats rehashing that for another 8 months.

I honestly had no idea they were going to give him the extension. Is that recent news?

The backpedalling must have been head spinning.

Laconfora reported it last week ish. Tim graham of buff news had contradicting story though. Who knows

Thanks a lot, I completely forgot how much we sucked. :D

I do wonder whether a sub-.500 HC, with one of the worst offenses in the NFL (hired with a reputation of being offensive-minded), 2 years into a 4-yr deal, requested an extension for his entire staff, in an effort to save face, knowing that he had an opt out clause in his own contract.
I have no inside information but it doesn't make a lot of sense he left because he couldn't get extensions for him and his staff. If he cared about his staff, he stays. Seems to me this was more about getting more control of player personnel - but like i said, that's just my speculation. Also, i read a lot of responses from folks saying they would do the same thing - take the money and run. I like to believe i would not do that for a years pay. Yeah, it was $4M, but it was a years pay to him - he had $8M more on the way for staying. Would you abandon "family" and make the guy who hired you (Brandon) look like an fool for a year's pay?

Welcome to the NFL...choose a different profession besides coaching if you're looking for job security.

I really don't buy into the extension rumor. I think either Doug or his agent thought he was a sure thing for the Jets and dougs huge ego stepped in and thought well that's an upgrade and gets him that much closer to the Giants. What he wasn't planning on was how disliked he is and the fact still remains he has an average record, he's bad with media, and is a control freak. All that doesn't bode well when the gm and owners want their say. Personally Im okay with him not getting anymore hc jobs after how he walked out on Syracuse. If you can do that to the "school he loves and owes his career to" then why wouldn't he do that anywhere else.

The only two faults I find with Marrone's decision is that he was short-sighted. He also let others control the narrative, which he failed to see coming. Granted, you can't stop others from commenting (especially the Bills), but he didn't put out a credible story line favorable to him before the haters started. Of course, there might not have been one available.

He has allowed himself to be branded a quitter and an opportunist while being an average coach. Maybe unfair, but that is out there now. At the very least it has cost him negotiating leverage.

Maybe he can make a binder with the 2011 "Nicest Coach in College Football" article on the cover of it.

You could not be more wrong in this post. Wow.

In other news, if Hackett is available I would hire him as OC.

is there any Hackett news out there? Is there a shot we could bring him in or we hell bent on bringing back one of the worst O-Coordinators in football? If the hope is this is a bridge year to the next staff/AD then i'd say just stay "as is" but i'd like to know if they are kicking the tires on Nate to see if he'd come back.

No. I don't think either side is that interested. He wanted to be HC, Gross chose Shafer instead.

I don't get the Hackett love. I thought he was horrible in Buffalo (although there is talk that Marrone was holding him back and was responsible for his vanilla offense). Additionally, people were ready to run him out of town here before 6 games changed everyone's mind about him.

Well... don't confuse my willingness to see someone other than Lester running the offense next season with love for Hackett.

We can do better than Hackett although we might have to wait for a new HC to find out.
