Looks like its going to be Austin Wilson

Reminds me of my sports crush on Hensley Meulens.

It's not so fun when it doesn't work out.

According to Wikipedia, Brien Taylor is set to be released from prison in three weeks, so he's got that going for him.

No Rivera?

No Guidry?

No Greg Cadaret?

Kevin Maas or Mickey Klutts anyone? You didn't have to be a rocket scientist to know that a guy named Klutts wasn't going to be an All Star. I still have that card somewhere.

This may need to be pulled out as a separate thread...I can envision several pages on this subject.

So did the cork in his bat.

He didn't have cork in his bat. He had Superballs. "Superballs", of course, being my nickname in college.

I was thinking of Kevin Maas as I was reading through this thread. That guy was going to break records.

Where's the love for Mel Hall? Local guy. Oh, he's serving time for being a serial rapist. Never mind.

Jesse Barfield. Steve Sax. Those were some crappy Yankees teams before Boggs and O'Neil were acquired in 1993.

this was the 1st baseball card i ever got, 1st pack right on top, right under the gum.

DAD!! I GOT A YANKEE!!! who is it??!!

thats Fred Stanley, SS. they call him the Chicken.

the what?

the chicken.

(probably a long, 5 year old's brain pause, as it tries to compute)...i hate chicken...(card goes on the spokes of my bike)

i find myself always graviting towards the hotheads and characters. Donnie Baseball & Pettitte being the exception, but what kid in a 1000 mile radius of NYC DIDNT like Donnie...and I saw Pettitte pitch in Albany with 3 of my buddies, about 15o other people and 1 very happy beer vendor in my section and just followed him.

Played a HS game against Mel Hall. Hit the ball so hard.

Matt Nokes was my favorite for a few years. I had a #38 jersey (with no name on the back; I hate that replica jerseys have names). I was devastated on the day during the 92 season when Mike Stanley was officially declared the everyday catcher. It was the right call. Injuries ended his career early. I suspect he could have been a PED guy. I remember seeing video of him in batting practice where he must have put 20 balls in the seats consecutively. He did have a seemingly effortless swing.

Anyway, those were dark times. It felt like forever, but the Yankees only really sucked for a few years. One can notice an attitude difference between Yankee fans who lived through that 88-92 period and those that came after. The same is probably true for fans that survived the late 60s and early 70s.

Pettitee was also the first guy I followed as a minor leaguer, then when he came up and was actually decent I couldn't believe it. All-time favorite player.

Ron Bloomberg
KCSU-
I'm a Bloomberg guy too. His fiancé was my 4th grade teacher in Liverpool during his first year with the Chiefs. We'd go to games and she would take us down to talk to him. I remember it like it was yesterday. Favorite player ever since. What's your reason?

So back to the original topic...

I think it's a good thing A.J. Didn't win the backup gig. I would much rather have our next starter after Hunt be a RS Sophmore so we can have a 3 year starter.

At this point it's a certainty that Edouard red shirts, and the competition between he and A.J. In two off seasons will be great to have. Yes Kimble and Wilson will be around to compete as well, but after them having an entire year in the program, A.J. would have beaten them both out if his arm hadn't gotten sore (as per whatever article a couple days ago). So it seems likely that he will be ahead of them once he actually has "real" time in the program.

I am surprised that Long was the #2, given his measurables and reports about his throwing. He must really have the "it" factor in a way that Mimble and Wilson do not. Going to be fun to watch.

Well, that was fun.

So, back to the hijack...

I go to every Old Timers Day, and around 2001-2003 Kevin Maas got invited.

It. Was. Awesome.

He was as young, or younger, than a couple of current Yankees.

It seemed like he had been out of the league for 20 years, but I guess it just felt that way because he flamed out so loudly and so much had happened since, but I digress.

In warm ups you could tell he meant business...BP display, outfield sprints, long tossing with a 'gun show'...the whole 9 yards.

Inevitably the Rocky quotes started...'he doesn't think it's a damn show, he thinks its a damn fight!!' 'Hes trying to get that eye of the tiger back!' Etc, etc...

Right on queue in the game...he ropes one off the wall and legs out a triple. Next at bat...goes yard.

Standing Ovation ensues.

We were hoping to at least throw him in a trade deadline deal...
