I mean the guy has won 2 NCs and played for 2 other NCs so he isn't a horrible or under achieving coach. I just can't call him a great coach. Coaching his team coming off a tough loss @Wake Forest to team in Miami that lost 5 of its top 6 scorers from last year and just played Syracuse tough the previous game he couldn't get his players ready. Jim Larranaga coached circles around Roy Williams last night. I thought Larranaga's gameplan against Syracuse was executed perfectly by playing stall ball and relying on Syracuse to struggle against their zone. Against UNC, Miami didn't play stall ball, but they exploited UNC's weaknesses. Roy Williams has never impressed me as an X's and O's guy. He needs a fast PG to be able to play his game which is too run and have his athletes out athlete your team and get buckets in transition and have a big that can postup if they have to play half-court offense. If I took a poll and ranked my top 10 X's and O's college basketball coaches today I believe would it would include JB in the top 10(even though Igor would claim otherwise), but I bet Roy Williams wouldn't be in the top 10.(even though I know PoppyHart will say otherwise)

Jim Boeheim isn't a perfect coach by any means, and has made his mistakes. However, I just can't think that if JB had all the talent that Roy has had at Kansas/North Carolina he would have won atleast 2 NCs. With all this said I still fear UNC this Saturday.

The key to any Roy Williams team is a dominant PG. He had some at Kansas (Jacque Vaughn and Kirk Hinrich). He had them at Carolina early on (Ty Lawson and Raymond Felton). They were even pretty good with Kendall Marshall and when he started over Larry Drew they flourished. He doesnt have that type of a player on this years roster.

a dominant pg does help most teams, and arguably unc's best player this year is its point guard. i find unc to be rather unathletic.

when you think about all the great teams hes had at kansas and carolina he should have more than 2 titles. and his title in '05 wasnt even with his players. the kansas team we beat in '96 to get to final 4 had a bunch of nba players, we had 1 and he didnt stick around too long.

True but this kid is far from dominant

Roy Williams reminds me of Mack Brown. Both IMO run clean programs, and are classy individuals who coach at the best brand in each college sport IMO. Texas Football and North Carolina Basketball are the best brands in their particular sports I believe. The schools recruit the elite of the elite for themselves. Each coach has a set system that they run each year, and have won atleast 1 NC each. However, I never thought though either guy is/was a great game coach. Roy has had a little more success than Mack Brown but not that much more.

I really don't know how clean the program is. Seems like they might take some short cuts in academics.

yea, unc appears rather filthy to me between butch davis football team and the widely reported academic shortcomings.

Their offense doesn't have a clue. PG gets no one involved, jacks up wild shots. I never got why they recruited Nate Britt. He's not their type. Now watch these guys go off on Saturday!

I'm wondering if the team mentally quit after Hairston was denied.

Well, I don't know. Remember that Matt Dougherty (sp) guy? The one who dissed the other team's cheerleaders? He was truly awful and UNC was awful then.

Absolutely. Roy's worst years in recent times were 2010 (the year after Lawson left) and last year (the year after Marshall left). Not a coincidence.

Their recruits either have left or not performed to their level especially their big men. The majority of their minutes are coming from Sophomores. McAdoo has not lived up to expectations also.

2010- Seniors
Harrison Barnes (1)- left after 2011 season
Reggie Bullock (16)- left after 2012 season
Kendall Marshall (29)- left after 2011 season

2011- Juniors
James McAdoo (5)- 14.4 pts/g 6.5 reb/g after last years 14.4 pts/g 7.2 reg/g
PJ Hairston (22)- suspended by the NCAA
Desmond Hubert (15th C prospect)- 0.8 pts/g 0.8 reb/g in 5.7 min/g
Stilman White (NR)- left for 2 year Mormon mission after freshman year
Jackson Simmons (NR)- 1.5 pts/g 1.5 reb/g

2012- Sophomores
Brice Johnson (50)- 11.2 pts/g 6.8 rebs/g
Joel James (51)- 3.7 pts/g 4.4 rebs/g
JP Tokoto (73)- 10.1 pts/g 5.7 rebs/g 2.6 a/g
Marcus Paige (35)- 17.0 pts/g 3.7 rebs/g 4.4 a/g

2013 Freshman
Kennedy Meeks (68)- 7.1 pts/g 6.1 rebs/g
Nate Britt (20th PG prospect)- 6.0 pts/g 1.9 rebs/g 2.8 a/g
Isaiah Hicks (18)- 1.9 pts/g 1.7 rebs/g

He was a very good recruiter though. Left the cupboards full for Roy.

Yeah doughboy would have likely won a title with that group as well.

One thing that stands out to me is that Roy doesn't have that competitive edge. He will seem angry and animated and he has his kids motivated to play but they lack that edge needed to win night in night out. He has always been a softy of sorts and his team is a reflection of that. Also to Marsh's point Roy does need to have a dominant point guard. He also needs a more traditional low post player as well.

Also from a recruiting perspective UK has really cleaned off the shelves UNC is used to shopping at. Certainly Duke and Cuse have done some damage as has self at KU but UK's resurgence in the recruiting world just shat all over UNC. The guys you usually see who are dynamite in their frosh campaign aren't there for UNC anymore. Instead its guys who don't get there until their 2nd or 3rd year. Add that to the off court issues that have popped up and it just seems Roy does not have that program in a good place. Its UNC and therefore as a blue blood they will turn it around to be monsters every year again. Just not sure that happens during the rest of Roy's tenure.
