Lou Holtz enters hospice

My decade long dementia suffering mother-in-law entered hospice in the middle of 2024.

She exited hospice about 6 months later.

She’s been in her memory care facility since.

She’s still in her memory care facility.

Up into this I had no idea that people can actually leave hospice and continue to live. She’s trying to set a record for the person to suffer from dementia the longest. We’re going on 11 years now.

Wasn’t sure what forum to put this.

Very sad. A great ambassador of the college game. He and Lee Corso are missed on tv. May God keep him when his time comes.

I don’t know much about him but remember that I was surprised that he was a frequent football commentator with such a profound lisp. That is the same guy isn’t it?

I tell ya Lou's family is blessed that they have hospice helping with his end of life. They are a god send for the patient and family. Have dealt with them before and they bring care and compassion into the home for patients and families.
Both my parents were not officially in hospice, but received parallel care. The professionals are to be thanked for their good care. COVID was horrible, Governors Cuomo and Hochul were horrible regarding visitation. The personnel knew when each of my parents was nearing their time and allowed family to come and go generously. So much so that in the few weeks for each parent, they just checked us in and let us go visit.

One of my best friends is a Notre Dame grad. Prior to the national title game last year I ordered him a Cameo from Lou Holtz. Lou did an amazing job and spoke for literally three minutes which is an eternity for a Cameo. I asked him to please finish it by saying “save Jimmy Johnson’s ass for me!” like he did in his pregame speech before the 1988 Miami game and he totally did it.

Yes, that is Lou Holtz. Knew his stuff but talked with a lisp. Sometimes, too much of a list to appreciate what he was saying.

Yes, off the top of my head (and someone can correct me), I think he first became a big time coach at Arkansas. He also had a very successful run at Notre Dame and got them their first national championship in a number of years. A few years later, he also had some recruiting violations. Very good coach. Good motivator.

He got an NFL (Jets) job based upon his success at NC St. He was successful at Arkansas and Minnesota also before landing at ND.

I had an opportunity to serve him food when I worked at Redfield’s Restaurant in the Marx/Renaissance years ago. The most unassuming, respectful, friendly, non-needy “celebrity” I ever came across there. No entourage (sat by himself), no special orders or requests, just a regular older gentleman who interacted with kindness - I’ll always respect him for that

He coached teams to 24 bowl appearances in 35 years, back when not everybody got invited as a participation prize.

He won 9 games or more 15 times.
He won 2 Cotton Bowls, 2 Orange Bowls, a Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl and Liberty Bowl.
He finished with a lifetime (college) record of 247 wins, 132 losses and 7 ties.

He had a rough time with the Jets. I remembered that, but didn't really want to bring it up.

My best Lou holtz story, maybe some others here were there.

He’s in town promoting his book and giving a talk in a luncheon environment to a whole bunch of sports people here in Syracuse, including me, this in a room at the Oncenter The book is all about working hard, character, old school values and doing the right thing, etc., this toward the achievement of coaching success, his success and story in particular.

JB and his crew are at the table front and center of the stage right below where he’s giving his presentation. JB’s talking through most of holtz talk.

When holtz is hitting a part about about the impact and importance of the respect for other people(or words to that respect), he stops his prepared remarks, puts his head down addressing the table in front and JB and says “right coach Boeheim!”

I nearly spit out my drink. JB zipped it up after that. Truly a surreal moment.
