Lousy coverage lately

Just been told Steven is at 700+ 1RM on the squat. Didn't think that was gonna happen so soon.
Dear god. I'd call him a workout warrior, but the kid broke the 2-deep as a true freshman at one of the most difficult positions to transition to from High School. What's your nickname for him Steve? I immediately thought "Bear" and then remembered that's your screen name. Don't let us name him, or he'll end up "XXX-Burger!" Steven must consume 8,000+ calories a day in order to not burn out, no? Don't soft-toss me on that question!

For those that would want to do the research and are too lazy to look back... Steven Clark, the man-beast DT, can squat 700+ lbs and hopefully soon will push past the 480 lbs bench plateau. I know it's not a fair comparison, but anyone who knows football, or tuned in for Hard Knocks, JJ Watt maxes out at 34 reps on the 225 bench and 700 lbs on the squat. Not saying Steven is going to be an NFL great, kid has enough pressure keeping up with academic honor roll and playing D1A football... but 400+ and 700+ is pretty elite territory.

bcubs9497 - Tell me his deadlift is 630+ and his power clean is in the 350+ range and I may bug out!

Don't know what Steven's deadlift is now. In high school, it was around 530. Maybe 545. He had me by about 50 pounds; my max deadlift at that time was about 480ish. Power clean, last I knew, was around 325. Think that was last year. Also, last I knew, he could crank out 32 reps at 225. Have no clue what that number is now. I assume it's roughly the same.

He's made great progress since the new S&C guys have been training him.

That is a very encouraging statement. If they are working with Steven, they are working with everyone. Orange is teh new big, strong AND Fast!

Talking with Steven now. Football team doesn't share.
So I take it most of the guys on the team are buying into Edinger + Company? Without revealing state secrets...it looks closer to Crossfit than old school bulk lifting (despite his claim to not like Crossfit). Expand if you think appropriate (don't want to get you in trouble).

Meet Sean Edinger: Syracuse football's No. 2 guy behind Dino Babers

I know Hicks had his fans but I also heard lots stories to the contrary.

Steven was unable to squat before, right? So if he is squatting again that's a great recovery sign, though I know you probably can't say anything right now BCubs. But for those of us left to speculate we have to think it is a sign he is coming back.

I'll give you a little on that... I may get in trouble but we will see. The team has been broke. Into 2 groups the orange group is doing speed and stamina training while the blue group is doing heavy lifting. I can't tell you who is in which group I think that may push buttons. I will say shy is in the blue group and isn't happy. He is doing his own workouts I send him by himself at night for speed agility and stamina. Thank god his girlfriend graduated and he has nothing to do but workout this summer.

It wouldn't surprise me if they switched the focus of each group a time or two. I doubt Dino wants one group of strong & slow guys and another of fast & weak guys. ;)

First and foremost, thank you so much for the insight. I greatly appreciate yours, and some others, presence on this board.

I completely understand the sentiment. But, I'll say this, I was chastised badly for doing the same thing by some of the top guys in S&C in the country.

When I discussed with multiple coaching staff's over the past handful of years, the thought process was the same. There's a reason he's been asked to do what he's doing.

The gains, or potential lack thereof, from duel training are counterproductive.

I agree they wouldn't have him or anyone train a certain way for the hell of it.

I would agree with you on the reason they are having him do this except that it isn't a group of kids who are fast or strong or slow or under size. This group is a much more arbitrary grouping.

As far as duel training goes I'll say this... different things work for different people. Lifting while adding polymetrics is a very good thing for shy. I have trained shy since he was 13 and when shy trains at home his body mass index fat goes down weight goes up speed goes up. Shy has never had an injury other than impact injuries. He had some tightness in his groin last year but that's been about it.

Honestly Shy's biggest problem with being at school is eating enough. I yell at him constantly about spending his money on anything but food. If he would just eat like we feed him at home he would be 230 235 instead of 218. And he would still run below 4.55

235 lb + 4.55 40 = #BEASTMODE!
