We came out prepared and ready to do what we wanted. That's really good to see, on the road against a team we need to beat to line up the kind of season we want. Special teams, defense and offense were all tight.

Granted, we didn't sustain that the whole game, but coming out immediately in control like that was extremely encouraging.

In the beginning we looked bigger stronger faster. They were going 3 and out. We were scoring. We were killing them on special teams. We also recorded an interception.

Special teams were fantastic. All the kicks, snaps, coverage and returns by the big guys. Add to that field position. Oh and another thing, Cordy taking control on those horrible punts by WMU to keep his guys the heck away from the ball.

As for the D. Lester saw something and adjusted then took advantage and hopefully SU will adjust and fix that problem before FSU.

Also I think it’s been underrated how we were able to turn it back on.

When a 4 touchdown lead shrinks to 1 touchdown, that usually doesn’t go back to a 3 touchdown lead. We were able to step on their throat when we felt the game starting to get away from us.

Yes, yes I know we don’t want the lead to shrink to begin with but that’s not the point of this thread

No one on this team has been part of a successful college team. Having a big lead on the road is something new, taking Dungey out made the rest of the team take their foot off the gas. I have stayed out of posting because I was super excited about Fridays game. We have sucked for so long and random posters were trying to over analyze and critique every little thing just enjoy a win on the road. 1 down and 10 to go, let's go Orange

Once SU got up big Babers was engaging in risk management and team development.

1. Dungey took two big shots before he came out. On the goal line and then he got planted I think the series after. If Dungey is the competive alpha that everyone thinks, why would his head get caved in by that move.

2. Devito needs as much work as possible given Dungey's history, and he had big margin to work with.

3. He needed to see how Devito handled it and moreso how the rest of the team did. Teaching moment that he can carry into the next two weeks. It's a 100 man roster, not a 1 man team, EVERYONE needs to pull their weight.

Lester maybe saw something, but his default wasn't to open it up and strike. He didn't do that until they were desperate.

Might have been a different game had he gone for the throat right from the beginning.

Completely agree. We took a punch and gave one back.

This is the second most perceptive quote I have read about the game. There is such a difference in mental attitude between losing teams and winning teams, it underrated and hopefully we can get a bit of an education this year.

We were incredibly vanilla though. Outside of the new power run formation we didn’t show anything special at all.

Listen to Lester's press conference, airing it out isn't what he want's to do, he played to win within the style he thinks he needs for the long haul. It's good to know you have that capability, but he wants to play complementary football and win, not just put up yards and lose.

He also acknowledged that they can't expect to tear off a series of plays like that for the long haul.

I think his thinking is completely backwards and counterproductive.

I'm glad to see that's how you see it as well. Babers was playing several different games on Friday nite, some more long term than just WMU. In the end, he won the game against WMU, got Devito in the game for a number of series with some success and some adversity, and was able to see the team dominate twice in the same game with adversity in between. Babers may have taken on more risk than many would like, he used the WMU game to prepare the team for ACC play. It was a good win partially because we gained more than just a W.

Agree with you, but disappointed by the defensive performance in the third quarter. No matter who is at QB defense must not give up all those big plays.

The adjustments were made offensively for WMU. They found some formations that gave them good angles on wham blocks from their H back. They also took more shots down the field which they had to being down 27 point. We were very vanilla on offense.

No matter what adjustments they made, and I do not deny their adjustments were successful, however our defense never got any pressure on their QB and our d backs were caught flat footed on several series. This can not be allowed to happen especially on multiple occasions. They had speed at wideout but not anything that we will not see from almost all ACC teams we will play. Defense simply must play better than they did in the third quarter.

I think the biggest mistake Lester made was those stupid squib kick kickoffs. How many times in a row do you give the opposing team the ball at the 40-50 before you just kick it deep? I think that was one of the things that really helped us win the game and dominate.

Imagine if Baber’s employed that strategy to the same effect? Holy crap he would have to build a moat around his house to keep the pitchfork gang at bay.

We’re over here complaining about putting the backup QB in for 4 series when we have a 27 point lead and our qb1 just took a massive shot to the ribs.

lol I just mentioned what adjustments they made on offense, not defense. Didnt say they were suppose to result in big plays for WMU. Our run fits arent consistent. Thats do to new LB's and safeties that havent played much. There's obvious issues with the defense. The key is to identify and correct them. We all know it shouldnt happen,.

We dominated on offense. Can you imagine the score if Dungey played balls out the whole game?
Glad TD got some PT. That will pay off later.
If the defense was just mediocre in the 3rd quarter (say they gave up 10 pts) we'd be ecstatic and ready to take on all comers. I think we can have a semblance of a staunch D. The key is a pass rush and stouter LBing. I think they'll have to blitz some.
Hopefully this game will be a lesson in playing 60 minutes of football and to keep your foot on the gas. The main thing is we WON.

so the big adjustment was throw the deep ball to the fast guy? i think the issue was the safety not playing his depth properly. if we just catch the INT they have zero at the half and none of this matters at all. but it was great to win and also see the D challanged by plays they screwed up on.

dont forgot that we got through the game with no major injuries

I agree, and that was simply the play and leadership of our qb, our only qb while healthy, for 2018.

True...then he saw what teams have been able to do vs the SU D for the past 2 years. SU took away what he wanted to do originally and then Lester adjusted and ran behind the DB's which if you have a lead isn't that something you don't allow, people to get behind you? When SU couldn't pinch in his running game opened up.

It was opening day for both squads and there is always a feeling out process and good teams adjust if they have that ability. I think this was a good teaching lesson for the SU DB's and I hope they will adjust and learn.
