I believe, in unfortunate situations like this through "history", decent men and women leaders have said things like this in reaction.
The difference then vs. now, is then they didn't have Jacka$$ reporters out for a name for themselves in some god-awful media universe who'd print that much.
But we do now, so a guy trying to handle all this gets smeared this way. Brutal. Just my opinion.

I think you missed the point. He likely said a lot more than the three sentences that were "quoted", as many others have in the past, but today's reporters have zero professional courtesy and so you have this situation.
