LSU vs. An Easy Win

I just have trouble believing that a recruit cares whether a program goes 5-7 and misses a bowl vs. whether they go 6-6 and play in the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit in front of 20k people on a weekday afternoon in late December.
We can schedule recruits while we're practicing for bowls. Much better atmosphere than places that aren't. Plus making any bowl gets our young guys much needed practice reps. Plus, the simple idea of playing for something and getting a banner is nice and easily packageable for pr.

The issue isn't cupcakes, it's been overscheduling out of conference year in and year out.

Before this season since 1991 there have been only three other seasons where only one FCS + ND & BYU have been on the out of conference schedule.

Twice, in 1991 and 2012, four P5 teams have been on the OOC schedule. 11 seasons it has been three, 8 seasons have had two.

That's nuts.
For a bunch of those seasons our conference was crap so we shoulda been able to schedule that way. Agree we can't/shouldn't now.

Long time lurker, great site. Just curious if those who have been firmly in the camp that we must schedule cupcakes out of conference still feel this way? I think this past LSU game shows exactly why that can be flawed thinking. This was a loss, but we gained so so so much more from it than we would have if we beat Buffalo instead. This has created a national buzz and has recruits taking notice. I think thats kind of the biggest thing about playing a big boy, you WILL be on national TV. These kids that are juniors and seniors in high school live football. They watch as many games as possible and this happened.

I feel that this year's schedule setup is perfect. I hope we continue it and yes, when we play Wisconsin down the road we will get the same perks as we did from this.

Future is trending up !!

you have too many numbers in your name

people who keep saying that recruits take more notice of a bowl game vs a game vs LSU... no way. Agree to disagree i guess.

i saw a bunch of tweets from recruits we got and didnt get (Irvin for one) who were tweeting about it. everyone was watching. No one watches or even attends those 6-6 type bowl games.

Don't forget, when players go to a bowl they get free stuff and basically an all expenses paid vacation. Even if the bowl is a crappy one.

I want to play one LSU every year but not the first game of the season. I want to schedule for success, which is 2 wins out of the gate.

The big opponent on game 3 or 4 is what makes sense.

This year's OOC schedule was perfect in my opinion; teams and layout.

recruits only took notice because the game was competitive. A 47-0 azz kicking and no bowl game and recruits take notice of that to.

jeez. so negative. and off base... thats not us anymore. luckily i live in the what actually happened, not what could have happened. what if we had won 47-0? we are now ranked and are the talk of the country.

I get what you are saying, the 3rd/4th game gets the kinks worked out.

However, playing a big OOC game the first game of the year seems to focus the team during the off season. You know, provides that goal to reach and keeps the buzz going all year round. LSU has played several big openers during these kickoff classics- TCU, Oregon and Wisconsin recently... even the afore mention evil, cheating <REDACTED> faced <REDACTED> coach of VaTech.

I seem to think that the LSU athletic department is forced to play these games for a few reason- big pay day; BCS/Playoff resume, gets the players use to a big game at a big location and exposure to recruits in Texas (or the region as LSU is almosted locked out of playing in Texas against Texas teams). A big seciton of the LSU fan base hates loosing a potential home game, but for the good of the program, I understand the descision to play the big opening games at these neutral sites. And guess what, no one wants to come to Baton Rouge in September, its Africa, Veitnam hot... except some hard core team from Syracuse!

I have been looking forward to the 2016 opener for about 2 years, Wisconsin... at Lambeau Field... yeah, I'm going.

Good luck this weekend against the bulls, I'll be rooting for y'all and for the USF cheerleaders, lots-o-talent in Florida.
