Maction, Kent St(Sean Lewis) vs Toledo

I only watch teams in the top 12 these days.

Similar to Dino it has been a struggle for Sean Lewis implementing the uptempo offense with the current players at Kent State in his first year. The announcers mentioned that 27 players were overweight/out of shape when Lewis arrived and the team is trying to learn a new offense and defense. Sean will we the same success in year three in the MAC. The game at Buffalo was in heavy winds and tonight they are playing in snow. In both of these games they struggled to move the ball.

In my opinion playing in a dome is the #1 reason I think Dino is staying here for a long time. Like Kent State our offense sputters in the wind and rain.

USC has "dome like" conditions all year. A lot easier to recruit too. That's the only opening that worries me right now.

Jason Candle is going places. Great up and coming coach.

Question, why ar you do high on him? I think he has potential but he hadn’t set the world on fire as a continuation hire. IMO year 3 is a big indication of what’s to come. They have had a down year and won’t likely make a Bowl.

What in your mind makes him a better choice than the UB or EMU HC who both have a longer track record?

As a first year HC you have so much going on at so many angles. I think we'll see some changes for Lewis before year 2 as he recalibrates and as any good coach would do, learn from his mistakes and move forward. I'm excited to see how he does from here.

Lewis' offense has fired many times this season, which is a major accomplishment considering that Kent St was maybe the worst team in the FBS. I his program is the same as Dino's, then the conditioning should make a big impact next year.

Google him. In short he has a great offensive mind. Was the OC prior to being named head coach. His teams put up a staggering amount of yards and points per game. Over 475 and over 40. He has won a championship, coached in 9 straight bowl games, was named MAC coach of the year and has consistently recruited the top ranked classes in the MAC. He is considered an excellent recruiter is young and has a strong foot print in our region.
I think that he is the next great coach out of the MAC.

lol, OMG, really? Just couldn't help yourself could you?
Sorry for pointing at that giant elephant that everyone sees.;)
It's just that to me, it seems USC would be the perfect storm. Higher pay for himself and his staff. Perfect playing conditions. More supportive fanbase. Much more fertile recruiting territory. The "Ohana", Lafamilia" factor too. He grew up in SoCal. I just can't imagine he doesn't wonder what he could do with a roster of 4 and 5 star NFL guys.

So you are attributing more of Toledo’s success to Candle over Campbell? Much of that 9 Bowl game streak he wasn’t HC and it ended this year under his watch. Toledo has had the best MAC recruiting class for the last dozen years. How much credit does he get over prior coaches?

Based off last year I am all in. Based on this year I think he needs to show he can win with his recruits. Year 3 typically tells you a lot. A little concerning that his year 3 is Toledo’s worst in a decade.

He inherited a really good 5th year qb last year. That helped him immensely in his first year as HC. QB's have been wildly inconsistent throughout this season and the defense is horrid. I would wait another year to see what he does before making the assessment that he's the next great MAC coach. And as a season ticket holder, I hope you are right. He did do what no other coach before him did though. He won his division and the championship game.

I think you need to see what Candle does in year 4 and 5. Those will be his players and his systems fully integrated. That said, he did go 11-3 last year and Campbell's best year was 9-2 but you can't judge a coach on one season. Anybody who does is a moron.

Helton makes less than Babers. so, more money is not a given.

I think he is a good O coach that can recruit, would be able to use our current players which is really important.

Is he still getting "Interim head coach" pay?

I very much doubt that. That said, looks like they are actually pretty close in salary with Helton slightly ahead. I thought I had read an article showing he was making something less than Babers. Both being private schools, not sure how accurate the numbers are.

Is there a reason USC is always mentioned as a potential landing spot for Dino? I have read nothing that indicates he desires that type of pressure and expectations, nor have I read that he adores that area. I would not want to be the coach that goes 12-3 most years and then gets fired after a couple of 6-6 years...especially being in my 60s. It seems like he has a good thing going here and can achieve similar goals with some breaks. His system might not be everyones cup of tea, but it works for us. Right now, he ain't beating Alabama coaching USC, either.

He could beat Alabama coaching Syracuse.

I assume its because they pay a lot (presumably), win a lot, and are a selector school for recruits. I'd think those three things stack pretty highly with professional coaches. They also appear (most) likely to be the only "big" program hiring after this season.
