Make sure to watch Shafers press conference

First spring game? I would have thought you were a regular at them. See you there.

They did a better job this season with it than previous years but they could do a whole lot better job and advertise it and make it an event.

The most advertising I'd ever seen for it was two years ago. Live band. Social Media was lit up. And, attendance increased by about 400 from regular years.

I'm all for Spring Games. I've missed one in the past decade. I just don't know what you can do to get more people in the door.

Also, I think the best moment I ever saw in the Spring Games was towards the tail end of the Robinson years. Gomez & Dave came on the field to MC, they gave some Joe Schmo from the stands a helmet and had him return a punt. He went about 3 steps towards the ball and faceplanted. I think the ball even hit him when he fell. I've never laughed so hard at a Spring Game. Pretty sure that should be an annual feature.
 
Being 70o miles away and a workaholic has gotten in the way. Now, that we are delegating more to others, we are taking more time for ourselves. Looking forward to all the away game tailgates, spring game and maybe fanfest. Going to cost me a lot of shoe money.

Where do you live Crusty? If you don't mind me asking.

I didn't realize you lived that far away. Will have to meet up with you at the next one.

I am thinking of the Fall Scrimmage where the turnout was great this year. Having it at the soccer field was a great idea. They could do more though.

I have been to quite a few of the Spring Games in the Dome, this year the free Dome Dog and drink voucher were a great idea. They need to build on that type of stuff. They are always fun but we really have not been able to have a real game in a while because of the low numbers and injured.

Hysterical, I missed that one...maybe because I had no desire to watch anything involving Gerg.

Interesting quote in the presser when Shafer was talking about the punt. Said as a defensive coach, he wanted to pin them and try to play for field position. Granted, we all know he's a former DC, but it kind of gives us a bit more insight to his overall thinking, considering the number of punts this year where we all thought he should go for it instead. I hope he makes time for introspection this off season and starts thinking a little more offensive minded.
 
Didn't watch the presser, did he happen to mention the direction they were going to be taking in finding a new OC? Or are we sending Lester to the same places McDonald went last year to learn about offenses around the country?

Agree, that's where I am. I do think he's an easy guy to root for. But a 7 figure annual salary for 5 years with Syracuse cost of living? Yeah, needs to produce.
 
I found his comments about the punt down 30-7 in the 4th compelling, for me, it certainly makes me question his awareness and situational thinking, at least in critical moments. He alleges extreme confidence in his D for the reason in punting, hoping, wishing that his D will get a stop, pinning them deep in their end, field position, etc., etc. Interesting that he felt this way, even though Pitt was running the ball down our throat the entire 2nd half...our D was exhausted and spent.

Additionally, with only a bit over 7 minutes left, precious time was certain to come off the clock. Even if Pitt had gone 3 and out, I'm sure they would've kept running the ball or high percentage passes keeping the clock running. In that moment, it should've been clear to him, especially with how the 2nd half had flowed (Pitt's overall control of the 2nd half) that maintaining possession was vital being down 3 TD's. Moreover, it speaks volumes of the lack of confidence his has in the offense. End result...Double Whammy!

That was the GRob era? You sure it was a fan and not a player trying to field that punt? I kid, I kid!
 
Will root for them every single game but I'm looking to the next coach to finally turn this program around.
 
have you ever had to work hard for anything in your life where you're taken down to the point where you have to question everything about what you're doing having to reach deep down relying on your faith including "fighting the good fight" mantra in that you're along side with others trying to achieve something meaningful, not only to those in that "fight" but important to other interested observers as well?

Something that shakes you to your soul with so many obstacles to overcome (injuries, recent history, location, weather, outsider negativity, etc. in this specific case), things that causes the night post Pitt that Shafer describes? Or we're you just entitled and spoon fed all along the way just taking the losers way out of taking pot shots from the sideline?

I find it shocking that people give any credence to a press conference.

That being said, I also find it shocking that people will listen to a politician's speech and come out energized or inspired.

Maybe I'm just too cynical or jaded, but anecdotes and rhetoric mean little to me when there is a record of performance to examine. Shafer's record of performance is increasingly spotty in that regard, and all the press conferences in the world won't change that.
 
It's funny...why do people always turn to the Ft Drum excursion as being an issue? Their practice and film/study schedule is the same as if it were here on campus. What do you think would be different about that. The only difference is their "off time" they spend with the troops learning and doing team building activities.

I find it funny how people turn to the most ridiculous things as an issue when things don't go the way they are planned. Very rarely do things always go as planned.
How about some intensive strength and conditioning or something that might have a chance of reducing the avalanche of injuries, or how to block on punt returns so that the punt receiver has a chance for a run back, or maybe some other fundamentals?

Keep the same D it is very solid

Stay healthy

Get a better schedule. How about a bye week when it helps

I agree. I'd also bet he's understanding of just that fact as well...

You're entitled to your cynicism.

For me - I don't think he's being a politician one bit. When he says this is the most proud of a team he's ever been - I think he's telling the truth.

The guy might not be a great coach, but he's coming across as a hell of a human being.

I am saying do whatever it takes, but don't break NCAA rules at a poster's suggestion that has no idea what he is talking about.
