Frank Maloney tok over the program at a terrible time. Stadium was falling apart. A scandal had hit the papers involving race problems. In 7 years he was 32-46. He was fired. Coach Mac took over. Only he had the Carrier Dome to recruit with. But after 6 years he was only 30-36. There was the sack mac movement. Yep. It was in the 7th year that things broke for us. Mac would go 36- 10 over his last 4 years. He finished 66-46 before heading to foxboro to coach the pats. No one complained that he was disloyal. He also took a number of ass'ts. P came in next. In 14 years he went 107-59. We beat a lot of big programs. Florida. Ohio state. Colorado. Notre Dame.. One losing season. It wouldn't kill us not to take glee in his failure with UConn. HCRE left the cupboard bare. That was why he left in such a hurry. P wasn't a good hire for them. But he did very well for us and he behaved with dignity.

You're right, no one complained Mac was disloyal. Mac actually accomplished his goals and left the program in a sustainable position. The same just can't be said for Doug.

If we do return to continued success, Doug will be a footnote. Unlike our last resurrection where Mac is given perhaps more credit than he is due.

Always like coach P. I thought he was an honest and classy guy. It seems like our failure to recruit an adequate quarterback after McNabb led to the downfall of the program. I remember the year Michigan came to the Dome. We would have beaten them with an adequate quarterback.

Agree totally with your comments about P's overall success here and, most especially, the coaching and behaving with dignity part.

However, I think the HCRE leaving the "cupboard bare" stuff is more myth than reality. Beginning with the 2011 NFL draft, the year P was hired, UCONN has had 10 players taken in the NFL draft, including 5 players taken in this last draft (3 in 3rd round). That is not "bare."

Many here underestimate Edsall's ability as a HC.

We should honor all of them for their contributions to the Syracuse football program. Maloney kept things alive when we were at our lowest ebb. Coach Mac brought us back to national prominence. Coach P. is our second winningest coach of all time and coached some of our most successful seasons and greatest victories. Doug Marrone came back home when he needed him to get things going again. None are above criticism but they all helped make SU football what it is and we should remember that instead of posting pictures of people laughing when they hit hard times.

Eds all left the cupbard bare - at least o. Offense.

His last season was a series rabbits out of hats.

I think 1 offensive TD in last three games that year.

And P had a top ten D last year.

One can take glee in storz's failure and still feel bad for Pasqualoni.

Right. Uconn averaged 27 points/game and 325 yds/game in Edsall's last season. Ranking above...West Virginia, Pitt, Northwestern, L'Ville, ND, Penn St, Clemson, S Fla, SU...

I agree with your statement about coach P.
We would have beaten Michigan in the dome if a pass interference call in the end zone had been made.

I can agree with that - cupboard was pretty bare on O when P took over. However - P & D are showing once again, that post Donovan McNabb they are simply incapable of putting together a coherent, effective offense in this era of football. It's too bad - but it's undeniable at this point.

Well said. I will never understand people who take pleasure in Coach P's demise. I have a lot of great Syracuse memories that happened during coach P's tenure (as I am sure a lot of people on this board do). Maybe the game passed him by, maybe it didn't (I don't care at this point)... but there was a point where him and Deleone were pretty innovative. The roll right throw backs... flea flickers... Kevin Johnson Passes from the receiver spot etc.

I was at the VA Tech game with the McNabb miracle-- with my dad-- I was probably about 10 years old but I remember it like it was yesterday.

I don't take pleasure in his demise and don't understand people that do. At the same time, I don't feel sorry for him either. In no other profession do we excuse incompetence by simply saying, "He's a great guy," (we wouldn't want the mechanic putting new brakes on our car to have that standard). I also can't feel sorry for a millionaire that is getting paid $750,000 to lose his job. I cringe a little when he's mentioned on tv or radio, because I feel like he's a guy that either doesn't know or simply ignores what his niche is. If he wants to coach, it needs to be as a position coach where he doesn't have to worry about the responsibilities of running a program. He was fine in that role in the NFL.

Ranking above in what? They were 96th in total offense, 110th passing. They ran the ball well, 35th in the country, but Jordan Todman didn't play for Uconn after that.

The cupboard actually was bare on offense.

As for scoring they had 30 offensive TD' and 25 FG's. They also had 8 TD's on defense and ST's, not something you can count on, or use those scores to judge the strenght of an offense.

haha no we wouldnt want an incompetant mechanic fixing our breaks-- agreed. Although I do but shitty coffee every morning from a guy outside my office building just because he is a great guy...

I'm not defending P-- he deserved to get fired.. Nor do I feel bad for him, as you mentioed $750k is a nice parting gift. I'm just saying i don't understand SU fans who enjoy his failures.
