Marlowe Wax: Chargers FA

I think of our UDFA’s this year, Wax and Meeks make the teams. Possibly Barron because of his versatility
If you look at the signing numbers for the Dallas UDFA’s, it’s pretty clear they like Barron. I think he’s got a good shot of making their practice squad at a minimum.

Marlowe Wax is another safety/linebacker hybrid with a long track record of stability as a tackler and a flair of coverage skill during his five-year stint at Syracuse. At just over 6-foot and 222 pounds with plus agility -- as evidenced by his 6.96-second time in the three-cone drill -- Wax can be a movable second-level defender on a Chargers defense devoid of a true star at the linebacker spot.

In his two fully healthy seasons with the Orange, Wax eclipsed 90 tackles and had 23 total tackles for loss. He's a magnet to the football near the line of scrimmage.

Was shocked Marlowe wasn't thought more highly of by nfl evaluators. A little undersized but when hits guys, they go down and has good quicks and speed. Always making plays in the backfield too. Has to be pretty high in SU Career tackles and sacks.
I think he’s similar to Franklin where he will hang on as a ST player and just wait for his shot to perform. I liked Mikel Jones, but Franklin and Wax were better. Marlowe isn’t the vocal leader that Zaire was, but he can play just as well.

Size. There are so many good LB’s. If you’re 6foot you’re going to have to earn a spot. Was shocked Mikel didn’t play in his bowl game because I didn’t think he had a chance of getting drafted. Was pretty confident Wax would have to go the UDFA as well. The ones I was surprised didn’t get drafted was Meeks and Barron. Meeks reminds me of a Hines Ward prototype and is a perfect fit for Dan Campbell’s hard nose culture in Detroit. I thought JB would go late because of his versatility. Great height, but really lean for LB. He would have to pack on some serious lbs. Might be a tad to slow for safety, but I think that could be a good position for him or maybe WLB.

yeah I hear ya on the size thing but he's actually 6ft 1. It's only an inch but i've been told that can matter :) His productivity is what jumps out to me along with his explosiveness. No way Barron can play safety in NFL. He was a step slow in college at safety. Barron has a good shot at LB based on his coverage ability and range. Agree a little lean to hold up at point of attack in the run game.

As one of the rare Cuse/Charger fans(I’ve experienced immense suffering), I feel like I have to comment.

There is no way Wax should be left off this roster. While the starting LB corps for the Bolts is solidified, Wax has definitely earned his spot over 2024 3rd rounder Junior Colson. Only problem is, Colson played at Michigan for Harbaugh. Colson has been a total non factor in his career. Did nothing last year, looked worse this preseason. Marlowe deserves to make this roster.

I hate to ask this, but with Marlowe and OG playing so much in the last preseason game, does it mean they are going to be cut? I hope not, maybe the practice squad if they don't make the active roster?

LINEBACKERS (10): Denzel Perryman, Daiyan Henley, Troy Dye, Junior Colson, Kyle Kennard, Khalil Mack, Bud Dupree, Tuli Tuipulotu, Del'Shawn Phillips, Caleb Murphy

Murphy's preseason performance in practice and in games earns him a spot in this projection. He could see a significant role in the regular season, depending on how healthy Kennard is going into Week 1 -- he missed time during training camp with an undisclosed injury. Phillips, who is going into his sixth season, was just recently activated from the physically unable to perform list but earns a spot because of his special team's prowess and experience. Marlowe Wax will be the toughest cut here, as the undrafted rookie free agent has been one of the team's most impressive players.
