1260 the Score spoke with Bud who was on the road today.

He railed on the decision to close practices to everyone.

He said it was an affront to the local, loyal fans that the first practice was being held in Rochester.

That there should at least have been a token, open practice in Syracuse, even if only a handful of people attended. At least it would be a symbolic gesture that they cared about the fans. This is nothing but a slap in the face.

On the other hand, judging by the low attendance at home games, they might feel the fans don't care about them anyway.

Poliquin said that if this was HCDM's decision alone he couldn't understand how the AD would allow this to happen.

He went on that there will be limited local exposure as it is, as there are only 5 home games to begin with.

In addition, they are alienating the local high school programs by having 3 Friday night games (2 home 1 away). He does understand it's good for national exposure though.

He wanted to know how does this all add up?

How is this romancing the fan base?

What muddled thinking led to this decision?

This says to the fans, "We don't care what you think or how you feel."

Again, I don't understand why there has to be a correlation between engaging the fans/marketing and practices being open. Yes, open practice would be a way of giving fans access, but it sure isn't the only way.

Bud's mixing everything into a giant bag and trying to tell a story. Many of these are unrelated. Closing spring practices has nothing to do with only scheduling 5 home games and making 2 of them on Friday. As if they were Marrone decisions, even Gross probably had little choice unless he wanted 2 FCS games.

The local fans get the spring game, which is the marquee event of the spring, if you want to call that marquee. The Rochester practice was agreed to a long time ago, little more tricky to back out of that one, but I'm sure if Marrone had his way, there wouldn't be an open practice in Rochester this year.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath, hope the closed practices improve the product, and get ready for 2013. There will be no more complaining about home schedule at that point, other than if all the NYC games previously mention end up taking the place of home games (excluding ND as that was a previous arrangement). I still need to see that one to believe it's going to be as much of an impact as Gross' initial announcement.

Game, set, match.

2012 is about as irrelevant a season as we're ever going to see. As long as there isn't some utter catastrophe it's all about getting this program positioned right for 2013.

How about, "You're a goddamn college football fan, stop pissing and moaning like a little girl about how you feel and just go to the freaking games, like they do in the south."
Difference being, Alabama gets 50K plus to come to come to a spring game, and like 20-25K for a practice. Alienating the fans, what few they have, along with a horrible home schedule next year is not the way to fill the seats.

If you think we can have the most irrelevant season this program has ever had and then say we are positioned correctly for the very next season, you have lost your marbles.

Our program has been mired in mediocrity and awfulness for a full decade. And you think we can afford to have an irrelevant season and then be ready to really succeed right afterwards? What evidence points to this?

Wow.

I'm a die hard fan. I'll convince myself, stupidly, that we can go undefeated and win the title next year right before the season starts just like I do every year. But when looking at this program through a realistic lens, there is absolutely no way we can dismiss the importance of this year. If we start 0-2 after ending last season on a five game slide, we are in real danger of adding even more damage to this program than already has been done over the past decade.

Maybe, but going 2-10 or 3-9 are not an option for success moving forward. Want to be considered the USF or Rutgers of Old in the ACC? I have no interest being a bottom feeder in the ACC and can anyone tell me where we are going to get 7 plus wins a year playing in a much better conferende than we do now? I am not all in with Marrone, thought his coaching last year in certain area's was attrocious at times. His recruiting is just so so.....and if it doesn't pick up, we will not have any depth at all going into the ACC. Are we forgetting what an awful year we had in 2011? Heck, we should have lost that game against Toledo, and the Tulsa game we really sucked. Barley beat URI. A 5-7 year could have easily been a 3-9.....sound familuar?

Yeah, people talk about the ACC schedule like it's some certainty that mildly better competition week-in and week-out is going to bring back the 45k+ crowds. This season is a HUGE turning point, IMO. The casual fan will be lost if after year four of Doug riding in on a white horse, we stink it up in the worst conference in America. Sorry, that's unacceptable to most of us...and we're the die hards.

Because again, you (and others even in this thread) keep calling it closed practice. It's not just closed practice to the public, it is a total blackout.

Not sure how you are interpreting what I'm writing. Case in point: why can't the athletic department host an event such as come tour the facilities/Dome or come herr floyd talk about his new role and what he's hearing from the football alums he's talking to (or whatever he does). Hell, Gedney was in NYC a few weeks ago and gave a "state of the program" type talk at the Lubin House.

All of those things would keep fans interested and feeling connected, yet none of them would involved Marrone or have anything to do with what's happening on the field right now.

That's my point.

The funny thing is we have generally started the season fairly well under Marrone-It's the end of the year where we struggled. How does closing Spring practice help finish the season well?

I didn't say anything about record, did I?

Just like Noel rumors, all of this is speculation. Marrone is for fans/against fans, he doesn't care, blah blah BS BS BS. Just to argue for the other side, what if there were specific reasons as to why Marrone and co are limiting practices from the public in an effort to quicken our path to success? Why is it always Marrone going against the fans/program/Bud/you? Point being, take a second to see it from a different perspective instead of reading posts that agree with yours and reaffirming to yourself that you're right.

2012 is a mulligan year?
the excuse guys have already givin up this season-lol

heck why not stay a bottom feeder if thats all that it takes to keep the apologists happy-

This is a good post. I think one of the things that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is also the fact that Bud is probably just simply ticked off about being blacked out. The relationship between the media and the sports programs has to be a two-way street -- don't call us a distraction when you're losing but expect us to run two full pages of SU football related items during the regular season when you're winning. Same thing with sports talk radio -- don't expect us to load up on college football topics and guests in advance of your home games if you're making it blatantly obvious you don't really want us around unless you need a little free pub.

I'm not saying this is rational, but I've had coaches do this -- completely you over on a story (go to the washington post with it instead of the local rag) but then get furious with me when I wasn't that interested in a puff piece on their senior QB.

Poloquin is a dofus.

And serious, alienating local high school program? this ain't Dade/Broward and even the thought that any local teams would feel alienated is a joke.

I suspect that Bud rarely if ever attends spring practice.

I know I have never seen him there.

Eyes? Extreme? Go? Tomcat?

Don't live in Syracuse, but even if I did I'm not sure it would matter if practices were open or closed.

Come fall, if all practices are closed to the media then we'll have a separate issue entirely.

All I want is for them to win games. If this helps (in Marrone's eyes, in the players, or whoever it matters to), then so be it. I don't care. If the team wins games, people will come. Not the other way around, right or wrong.

I, for one, think this year could be a breakout for the team. I really like a lot of the groups that we have coming back, and just hope that our QB decides to take some chances and win some games, rather than not lose them.

I think your problem might be that you can't separate any discussion from being about Marrone's coaching acumen.

I figured most people here would understand that we were talking about fans complaining about the lack of attactiveness of the 2012 home schedule, and that it's only going to be a problem for 2012 in this dead end league.

I also figured that most people would know that we still need to be a better football team than we were in 2011, as we prepare for that ACC move.

I really don't think you're most people. You might be the 1%, but not in the way everyone aspires to be the 1%.

Agree 100%, I dont know where some on here get the idea that the casual fan is suddenly going to rush back to the dome because were playing GTech or Virginia at Noon on a Saturday in October most non diehards couldnt seperate the ACC from the Big East in terms of stature if there life depended on it.

I've seen Nolan there, and Dave Rahme on occasion. Used to see Donnie Webb when he covered the SU beat.

Never saw Bud.
