Marrone had a 4th and 1 around the 45 before it was a laugher. They packed everyone in (boo but baby steps) and failed. Then they went and got the ball back a minute later. Defense and offense both knew he believed in them.

That's the way to do it! Maybe going for it, failing, and seeing that it's just not that big a deal is more educational to these guys than going for it and succeeding

i wish they could play the jets every week

Back in 1998, when we played Michigan after a week of storms in CNY and we couldn't practice, I had this theory that it was probably a good thing, because football coaches probably tend overthink things, over-worry and many times can be their own worst enemy.

I had the same thought last night.

It wasn't a minute later, the Jets moved the ball to the Buffalo 30 until a couple of sacks and penalties moved them back and forced the Jets to Punt. Cost them 45 yds in FP in starting at the 10. Where the 90 yd drive came from who knows.

How did Buffalo blow them out, by winning FP. Blocked punt at the goal line, Int deep in Jets territory.

I have always hated that quick hand off to the fullback on 4th and short, qb sneak seems to be better. But like you said baby steps but anything but that FB hand off

Maybe Doug realized he has a very good defense. The thing that should give you license to go for it on 4th.

Costing them field position is an assumption.

the jets gained net 10 yards on offense after that failed 4th down conversion. 5 plays whoopdeedoo

they blew them out by killing vick. field position was just an effect. you are on bath salts. not letting QBs complete a pass and punting a lot are not the same thing even though both might be referred to as field position by solomon wilcots and you

You really don't understand the game, do you?

forcing michael vick to go 7-19 with a pick and 5 sacks is not usually referred to as winning the field position battle.

the only reason to call it that is to justify being stupid on 4th down in the interest of winning the field position battle

Jesus, they scored their first TD starting at the Jets 45. They scored another forcing a punt at the goal line, blocking it, and recovering in the endzone. They scored another after a pick deep in Jets side of the field.

The Jets scored their only points after starting a possession inside the Bills 40.

Pretty basic stuff. Surprised that someone of your supreme intellect can't seem to grasp it.

winning the field position battle by killing the QB and picking him off is different than winning the field position battle by punting better than the other team

part of the reason the jets didn't have good field position is because kyle orton was great.

if you want to call being way better on offense and defense "winning field position" knock yourself out.

Costing them field position is an assumption.
then he says "who knows where the 90 yard drive came from"

it's so baffling, how can a team possibly overcome 30 yards!

20/20 hindsight. If the game had taken a different turn and they ended up losing the game by a field goal, this thread would not exist.

I actually think it's important for fans to applaud and discuss as much as they can any time a coach makes the decision to go for it on 4th. One of the few ways the narrative on punting can change.

Yes or we'll see more things like this

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1
Shafer said reasoning behind late 4th-and-1 punt at Pitt was field position, hope to force turnover, offensive struggles.

Sorry, this one is even scarier

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1
Shafer said he if he could do it again, he's not sure if he would punt. Went with his gut at the time.
that's not scary at all. that gives me hope! good for shafer for reflecting on it

he's never going to come out and say "of course that was a terrible thing I did"

How did said sacks/penalties/turnovers/block possibly happen with the incredible, insurmountable tidal wave of momentum (which every mentally challenged announcer swears by) gained by the Jets on 4th down?

My point wasn't that it made sense. My point was that is was meaningless. Losing hope over a meaningless play seems dumb. There were a lot of other meaningful dumb decisions to get worked up about - but people want to focus on the punt.

Side Note not Related to anything: What on earth did the refs see in that INT in our end zone? That guy bobbled the thing as it hit the ground! Not an INT. Took points and momentum (if you believe in it) off the board.
