Marrone on Axe

Umm, Paul Brown was a very pass-happy coach. His offenses with the Browns were light years ahead of the times. I believe he was the first coach to use an empty backfield.

Paul Brown has to be on the Mount Rushmore of NFL coaches. From 1946 to 1955 he led Cleveland to 10 straight championship games in two leagues. Not only that, he founded two teams, the facemask, playbooks, the draw play, year-round coaching staffs, and the 40-yard dash while putting the word 'Pro' in 'Football'. Three years after giving birth to the Bengals he coached them into the 1970 playoffs for the quickest postseason bid for an expansion team until the Jaguars and Panthers emerged in the '90s with an unlimited checkbook."

Wow -- there is a new angle (wishful, but new). I sure hope Doug tries to mix it up a bit, but he has limited weapons in the arsenal. He runs because he believes in getting this team into a 2nd and 6 situation, 3rd and 3; and not into 2nd and 12. The OL won't hold up, he doesn't have deep threats, so getting into 2nd and 12s is a losing approach. He said that in the interview, sincerely, and he has shown that in his gameday tactics, again and again. He also said he is working to narrow the playbook to the plays that Nassib & colleagues have confidence in. Could all be a charade to fool Cincy, if you think Doug is a crafty sort of guy.

Looks like that went over your head.

Perhaps we should just give Cinnci our game plan.
Why would we tell them what we are going to do?

I guess you could say Kelly was outschemed by Holtz right? Marrone is 1-1 against Holtz and 1-0 against Holgerson

I agree with your general post and even your stance on kelly, but 5 TOs, including two in the end zone, were the reason ND lost that game. Not sure that had much to do with scheming.

And 5 TOs and 1 in the endzone is the reason we lost to RU ... honestly we could do this all day ...

I agree in general, but in the present case I see lines of argument that resemble personnel files compiled to justify firing with cause. The contention here is that Marrone is out of touch with the college game, and worse, he stubbornly insists on an offensive system that puts us at a disadvantage right out of the tunnel. And then he insists on setting the gameplan to try something that likely will not work, over and over, despite evidence! That goes beyond irritation with a coach's quirks. That argument says, "Our coach is putting us in a position to lose." And he is doing it repeatedly, by design.

The logical end of that position is that the coach has to go, even if people don't admit it.

Well, my criticism of the coach is not an attempt to get him fired. If after 5 years we aren't any better, then job retention will be an issue but right now I'm just analyzing what I see.

If it doesn't work out with Marrone, hire me. I'm a Syracuse alum, I wouldn't leave to go anywhere else. I'd get the best recruits by being SEC-style corrupt. And I'll run an offense of nothing but trick plays where each play is trickier than the one before it.

A turnover in the 4th quarter and then a missed opportunity on a forced fumble ended up losing the game for Syracuse against UCONN... that wasn't scheming either. A bunch of turnovers against Rutgers lost the game for Syracuse... how does that translate to a schematic problem with the Syracuse coaching staff? 3 dropped TD passes against USF where Syracuse scored 3 total points on those possessions... could have made the difference I think. Turn those around, and SU is 8-2 instead of 5-5... that sure would feel much better, wouldn't it?

I'm not sure what the point is here. I mean, if you really want to get into this argument, ND had over 500 yards of offense and we had 295 in 4 quarters AND overtime. But all I was saying was that it's probably tough to argue that Holtz outschemed Kelly in that particular instance.

Uhh, yes. I'm not sure who you're arguing with. Me? I simply said Kelly didn't exactly get outschemed by holtz when the irish put up 500+ yards of offense but had 5 TOs. That's all I was saying. The rest of this is irrelevant. It would be great to be 8-2.

Its not the game plan, its execution...For example down by 2 scores we drop 2 TD (plus 1 in first half) part on receiver part on lack of touch by QB...the staff is putting them in position to make the plays, they are just not executing, and these are plays that they executed at other times...you could look at the entire season and see that lack of consistancy in their execution
