One thing that impressed me in the ny post article regarding Gus was at the end where it highlighted that when he first sat down with Marrone they barely talked football, but instead discussed life. For a kid going through a heavy recruitment being told where he will fit, and how much he can play, and what he can contribute it can become dizzying to say the least. To be approached as a person instead of a player can have a very positive effect on kid, specifically the more mature ones. This approach may have been a little too undefined n the past but it seems to be a common theme as of late. These kids seem to fell they are part of a bigger thing than just football. It is amazing what feeling wanted versus needed can do to someone's decision making process.
