Marshall drops out of Independence Bowl

In an ideal world, I agree with you about the portal. But the championship game is now Jan 20 which is after many schools have started a new semester, so transfers won't be able to participate in spring practice at their new schools. And that may be no big deal to you, which is fine. But it is something to consider.
Why can’t the portal open after all of the non-championship bowls…and all of those bowls need to be wrapped up by January 2nd. Then the only impact is on the kids playing in the championship. And they can decide if they want to portal or not.

I would have no problem with that.

This whole thing disgusts me and strikes me as a colossal failure on the part of the administration.

Although several starters are among the approximately 30 players who have put their names in the portal, I find it had to believe all 30 have no interest in playing the bowl game.

The administration failed to identify an interim coach when Huff left.

Did the team even start to practice to prepare for the bowl game? The game is on the 28th and practice should have started this week.

I really feel sorry for the 20 seniors who earned the right to play in this bowl and now that is gone.

The 3rd tier bowls will die first.

Shots fired.

Which is more important? The integrity of the season or spring practice? An maybe you don't have to wait until 1/20: the teams playing in that game aren't going to have opt-outs. Maybe just limit non-playoff games to 1/1/ or earlier and open the portal on 1/2.

Significantly reduce the post season bowls to match up non-playoff conference champions and the first few power schools left out. This retains the idea of rewarding teams that actually had outstanding seasons. Have somewhere between 4 and 8 games and be done in December. Move portal into January.

Convert the rest of the bowls into preseason Classics with conference tie ins based on prior season standings, or at least loosely so. All matchups won't be ideal, but it will force a ton of significant interconference matchups before the rankings become entrenched.

You could even expand it and create a big Opening Week Extravaganza. Rematch the title game or put the finalists vs the semifinal loser from the other bracket, match up the other playoff teams, etc.

I think week zero "bowl" games might be smart.

Heck if Syracuse gets a few more motels they could host a game...maybe sponsored by Micron
A few more? How bout we replace the ones we’re losing first?
