Watched an HBO documentary on Marty the other night. I'm sure many of you have seen it, but if you haven't, I highly recommend it. It touches on the 1936 Olympics, his time at Syracuse, and his career in broadcasting. As I watched it suddenly became very personal for me when they showed a pic of the 37 team and there was my Grandfather, front and center. I always knew they played together, but it never dawned on me that I might see him during the show. Very cool. The original #5.

Marty was one of the best play-by-play announcers ever.

If he didn't invent play-by-play announcing it sure seemed like he did. He is the standard by which others are measured.

Met him at Syracuse Sports Nite in DC in 1992. Very cordial, nice guy. He was sitting with Red Auerbach.

First of the great SU sport announcers.
