Marvin Harrison and Dwight Freeney on CFB Hall of Fame Ballot

I think Freeney is the stronger candidate here. I think anyone who follows college football understands he was the best defensive player in the country (arguably the best period) his senior season. He led the country in TFL and just completely dominated every game Syracuse played all season long. He was really good before that and an unbelievable player as a senior.

I will also say that it makes no sense having Morten Andersen on the ballot and not Gary Anderson.

Anderson made over 75% of his FG attempts in college. He never missed a PAT. Andersen made 62.5% of his FG attempts and missed 4 PATs. Plus Anderson led the country in FG accuracy as a senior. Andersen never did that. Was never close.

Gary also deserves to be in the NFL HOF.

Anderson 1
Andersen 0

Your move Andersen.

True. I remember Freeny his senior year. Team was good but he won us games by all his plays. He was unstoppable.
When is he eligible for the nfl hall of frame?

Imagine how terrifying it must've been to line up across from Freeney? Tackles could barely touch him to even try and hold him and he could outrun majority of opposing RBs and QBs. It's not just the bias talking, I've never seen another DE get off the line like him nor possess such a full arsenal of moves to render opponents helpless.

that ballot is loaded. I don’t think Marvin makes it. Rex Culpeppers dad is also on it.
Agree. I was just looking at guys that were multiple time 1st team All-Americans and there were 22 of those guys on the ballot. Have to think Marvin is behind Warrick, Crabtree and Maclin of the modern guys as they were all Heisman candidate type guys. The people that watched Freeney in 2001 will know that he was a game wrecker in a similar way that Bush, Warrick and Warrick Dunn were on that list.

I was fortunate as a Syracuse fan to see both of those guys play every Saturday in college and most Sundays as pros. Almost feel bad for the younger Syracuse fans who didn't. I mean Freeney was just crazy good and Harrison was the smoothest WR I've almost ever seen. Dude just glided out on the field and caught everything. Was really fun watching those two guys play the game.

I believe we were near the top of the country in interceptions that year too. How many of those were Freeney pressuring bad throws? I've never seen teams do the combination of double teaming and moving the pocket that teams did in an attempt to slow him down that year. Wasn't he close to or at double digit sacks his junior year before he got hurt?

I just looked at his Wikipedia page. I believe it's incorrect where it says he was a two year starter. I believe he was also a starter as a sophomore too. I remember him playing with a cast on his arm that year.

I feel bad for young SU fans now too. I was spoiled watching the SU teams of the 80’s and 90’s as a kid. I often wonder if I would be an SU sports maniac if I was a kid the last 10 years. I’d like to think so but I doubt it. At least not to the extent I was.

2023. Here is how Freeney compares to other DEs all-time per Pro Football Reference. He has the 15th best resume all-time per their algorithim.

I'd say 1985 was a pretty good DE class. Bruce Smith, Reggie White and Chris Doleman.
As great as Freeny was, Bruce and Reggie had 75% more sacks and 3 times the tackles. That's just unbelievable!

And Chandler Jones at the bottom of that list ... two great SU alums on that list ... not many schools can boast that. UNC with LT and Peppers but damn great seeing our guys on that list. There are three HoFers on that list behind Freeney. I hope he gets into Canton, if Jones puts in 7 more years he may very well pass Freeney on that list with the same number of seasons under his belt. Only 4 of the players above are still active as well so Chandler has time to climb.

It seems crazy that Chandler is only four sacks less than JJ Watt and he’s played one less season.

And yet, Watt is a household name, but most casual NFL fans don’t know Chandler from a hole in the wall.

Being stuck on a west coast team that hasn't been all that good is bad for recognition. If he hadn't been traded there he probably would've become a household name in New England. The pundits know him well though. They have a lot of respect for him. Here's hoping he can get healthy and pick up where he left off and Arizona can get good for a while.

True but due to injuries he has only played 4 less games than Watt.

LT was not a DE and not on that list

Was living down in SEC country during Freeney years and my SEC football crazy friends had nothing but admiration for Freeney and could not believe this kid was not in the SEC playing.

I would still prefer Freeney, but what a freak of nature Julius Peppers is/was. Four career pick sixes as a 300 lb defensive end, and also had a 20/10 game as a basketball player in the NCAA Tournament.

He got up to 300 lbs? I didn't realize he ever got that big.
