I really think that he is just not suited to be a starting midfielder here. He simply doesn't have the skills it takes at midfield. In my opinion this is not all his fault, when he came here he was a 6-foot-7 240-pound attack man, thats where he should still be. Put his big body on the crease and just feed him the ball and let him try to back down his defender. But man has he been bad this year. 2 points in three games for a starting middie is not good.

Desko is going to have to find something soon, maybe its put Mariano back up at middie. I think our best 6 offensive players right now as we speak are: Voigt, Evans, Rehfuss, Mariano, Bomberry, Salcido that should be our top six.

wow, just wrote the same exact thing on another topic!

One thing that no one is talking about is the lack of production and overall toughness from 1st line mid Matt Lane. he has 1 goal and 1 assist on the year. For a kid who is 6 ft 6 230+ he really struggles to create his own shot, and for some reason he continues to play.

the staff should have realized this by now. B. Bomberry needs to be on the field and touching the ball EVERY single possesion. He is the best scorer on the team and cannot get stuck on the bench. Move mariano up to middie with rehfuss, solomon and evans at attack. 1st midfield Salcido, Mariano, Bomberry. Lane is struggling and its time to make a change

Lane simply isn't a threat. Completely one dimensional and not aggressive whatsoever. Scary to think he's one of Desko's 3 best midfield options.

When Rehfuss or Voigt were in the game, Lane was bumped to the 2nd Mid line.

I think they bumped off the midfield all together. The second line played a shift or two in the 4th and he wasn't out there.

A lot of the midfield recruits have not panned out. Romano has been hurt, McGinley transferred. Nash never made it here, and the 5 from the 2014 class have all under whelmed and only Carlin is actually playing.

I'm thinking get Rehfuss on the field. Bump Mariano back up to Mid. Salcido, Mariano, Bomberry, Solomon, Evans and Refhuss.

Rehfuss definitely needs to get on the field more, zero doubt about it. At this point I don't know if Desko feels comfortable moving Mariano back to the midfield full time based on the weakness of the attack unit as a whole. If that's the case then bump Rehfuss to the starting attack let Solomon be the 4th guy and bump Voigt back to middie where he can play on the 1st line if he's going to move Lane or put him on the second and move up Simmons or Trimboli to the 1st line.

I think Lane struggles are similar to Evans his 1st & 2nd year as a middie. Both are attackmen without the quickness required to be a dodging threat as a middie. Would be interested to see Lane moved down low and look to back his defender down. If he continues to be a middie, why aren't the coaches looking to invert him vs the SSDM? You would think with his size he'd be able to shoot over the shortie with a question mark dodge or finish off an inside roll. Or the other option is move him to a shooting spot and dodge to his side and force an adjacent slide, opening a shooting lane.

There seems to be a lack of development from the recruited 2013 and 2014 middie class. Not sure if that's a coaching issue or on the players

I imagine Desko will continue to tinker with the attack and 1st midfield till he finds the right 6.

why not put Bomberry on attack

1st midfield is already struggling, you can't rob Peter to pay Paul. Bomberry has been the most consistent middie and the #1 guy there right now.

I would put Rehfuss in for Solomon and switch Bomberry and Mariano. Bomberry is a worse dodging threat than Lane, moving him down low allows Mariano to work against a SSDM while still leaving Bomberry on the crease.

I think speed or lack thereof is what is really hurting Lane. I think SU thought he didn't have the quickness to beat a close defender as an attackmen so they made him a middie to try and take advantage of his size a la Myles Jones. The problem is that Lane is now alley dodging around the cage and looking to pass versus looking to dodge to get free to rip like Myles Jones. Lane has also struggled to really bull dodge with any sort of effectiveness outside of the tourney game last year against Albany when he had an excellent goal. He's a prefect man up specialist with his size and rocket shot but in 6 on 6 play hes struggling to make an impact. He reminds me a lot of the big lefty sniper at Hopkins, very similar. Just like Lane he is a bug guy, decent athleticism, and a terror on man up with a bullet shot but hasn't been able to transition his game to 6 on 6. At this point you could move him back to attack but were already 3 games into the season and he hasn't practiced at attack in probably 3 years. Not sure what you could expect from him at this point if you made the move. Best thing maybe to bump him down to the second mid line and work with him on being more aggressive and hope it clicks.

Interesting idea about swapping Mariano and Bomberry, I had similar thoughts as well but was wondering if Desko would want to change it up based on how successful Bomberry has been so far vs Mariano who has played attack in college.

I talked some smack mid game on him, because he was trying to run by guys and was going no where. In the second half he put guys on his back using his size and was great. Kudos to him. Great second half by him and Solomon.

He finally dodged with purpose today. Was dodging to shoot instead of simply hoping to draw a slide. Loved the bounce shot & he also finally stung the corner he's been hunting all year. With his height & high overhand release point, goalies will struggle to track it if he goes low.
