Never knew her mom was Minnie Riperton or that Maya was considered black always thought she was Jewish. Riperton sang back up for many of the greats in the music industry including Etta James, Bo Didley, Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters.

Sadly Minnie died from breast cancer at the too early age of 31 years old.

This all came up after I read about Sasheer Zamata being the first African-American cast member being added to SNL since Maya in 2007.
